6 Times Deadpool Was An LGBTQIA+ Icon

Ryan Reynolds recently broke the internet with a team-up announcement for Deadpool 3, but behind the scenes, Reynolds has been pushing Marvel to show a different side of Wade Wilson. In the comics, Deadpool is firmly pan-sexual, as confirmed by writer Gerry Duggan. Co-creator Fabian Nicieza agrees, saying “He is NO sex and ALL sexes. He is yours and everyone else's. So not dismissive, but rather the epitome of inclusive.” However, Marvel Studios has kept his portrayal strictly heterosexual onscreen, despite already being banned in China, and not needing to appease the censors there. At a Comic-Con panel in 2018 Ryan Reynolds said “I think [Deadpool’s sexuality] could be played up more. He’s an outsider in every way, shape, and form” so there’s a possibility that we could see a more accurate portrayal in the future. In the comics, Wilson is confident, forthright, and unashamed of his sexuality. It could only be positive to bring his example to the screen. Here are six times that Deadpool was an LGBTQIA+ icon.

6) A Love Triangle With Death And Thanos

In true pan-sexual fashion, Deadpool will knock boots with any lifeform, even Death. This drew him into a love triangle with Thanos who was desperate for Death’s approval. In a fit of jealousy, Thanos made Deadpool immortal to prevent them from being together. Thanos’ efforts to keep them apart also created the infamous ‘no pickles’ Deadpool.

5) Flirting With Spider-Man

This is ongoing through the whole Spider-Man and Deadpool series (2016-2019). A ton of fans ‘ship’ this pairing, to the point where it was the subject for the Pride cover of Marvel’s Voices this year. If you think that this is just a bromance, then look again! This is just one panel, but there are more out there.

4) Crushing On Captain America

Deadpool isn’t above stanning another superhero. Even though he was essentially Cap’s trigger man he still had a crush on the patriot. They had a few fallings-out over the years, mostly due to Deadpool’s questionable morality, but the pair shared a strong bond that Deadpool failed to replicate in other team-ups.

3) Flirting With Thor

Unfortunately for Wade Wilson, this did not go down very well with the Asgardian. In fact, at the end of Deadpool Team-Up Vol 2 #887 Thor denies their team-up happened, but that never stops Deadpool from trying.

2) Deadpool’s Free Pass List

In Deadpool: The Gauntlet #3 he gets married to succubus Shiklah in an issue that also includes Blade. Like any good relationship, Deadpool has a list of names that don’t count as cheating, aka a free pass list. Predictably, Thor and Spiderman feature, but you’ll never guess number one!

1) Wearing A Dress In A Musical Issue

The lyrics of this issue are written to popular songs of the time, such as the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme, and Chocolate Rain. But more iconically, Wade Wilson appears in a dress, and when Spiderman questions him, his response…  it’s “just because.” Deadpool’s outfit in Deadpool #49.1: Deadpool The Musical is a popular cosplay, and why wouldn’t it be? It’s incredible! It’s not the only time Deadpool decides to dress up. On the cover of Wolverine & Deadpool: Decoy Vol 1 Wade Wilson rocks a sexy Phoenix outfit.

Deadpool is out and proud in graphic novels, it would be amazing if Marvel could reflect that in Deadpool 3. Will we ever see Ryan Reynolds and Tom Holland exchanging pickup lines? It’s hard to picture Marvel Studios being that brave in the current political climate, but we always hope for progress.
