5 Things You Need To Know About Adam Warlock Before 'Guardians of the Galaxy 3'
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios showed a trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The trailer shows the first look of Will Poulter as the powerful Adam Warlock. Adam was the focus of the Infinity Gauntlet comic series. However, that story has already played out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) without Adam’s involvement. Now, it looks like Adam is set to be the Guardians’ next antagonist. Here are 5 things to know about Adam Warlock before he makes his full MCU debut.
5. Adam Is Already Part Of The MCU
Back in 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ayesha, the High Priestess of a group called the Sovereign, chases the Guardians of the Galaxy through space in their second MCU film. In a post-credits sequence, the gold-skinned villain looks at a strange cocoon. Ayesha talks about evolution and her creation. She claims the creature in the cocoon is “more powerful, more beautiful, and more capable of destroying the Guardians of the Galaxy.” Searching for a name for her creation, she settles on Adam.

4. Adam’s Comics Origin
In the comics, his origin is a bit different. A group of scientists called the Enclave created Adam as a prototype for an invincible army. When Adam awoke, he sensed the evil intentions of his creators and left the planet Earth, destroying the Enclave lab in his wake. This story ties in with the Fantastic Four’s adventures as The Thing’s blind girlfriend, Alicia, is the one to find the cocoon. Although Adam was angered by his creators, he manages to spare Alicia when he senses her good heart.
3. The Bearer Of The Soul Stone
After creating a Counter-Earth, the High Evolutionary granted him the power of the Soul Stone and gave him the name Warlock to be this new Earth’s superhero. With the powers of the Soul Stone, Adam can trap the souls of living beings. At the start of his heroism, he encounters a group of kids that name him Adam. Through his adventures, Adam forms a symbiotic relationship with the Soul Stone. There are even times it allows him to override the will of someone else. While this gives him great powers, it also has dire consequences.
2. His Greatest Threat
On his adventures through the cosmos, Adam encounters the Universal Church of Truth and their oppressive god Magus. Adam is shocked to learn that Magus is a future incarnation of himself. During his adventures, Adam acquires the Infinity Gauntlet and becomes a completely logical being. His evil side takes the form of Magus while his good side becomes an entity known as the Goddess. In her extremism, she turns out to be as great a threat as Magus. Seeing the evil person he could become, he decides to prevent the Magus from ever coming into being. At times, Adam will team up with Thanos to prevent his two extremes from causing havoc.
1. Immortality
The strange cocoon that Adam is born from turns out to be another hidden power. Whenever Adam is close to death, he wraps himself in his cocoon to wake up in the near or sometimes distant future. Each time he is reborn from his cocoon, he has newfound powers. This constant cycle of resurrection may prove to be a threat to the Guardians in their next MCU outing.
The post-credits scene from Vol. 2 sets Adam up as a villain, but James Gunn may have a few surprises waiting for his audience when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes to theaters on May 5, 2023.
