Hawkman first appeared in FLASH COMICS #1. Since then, the character has become iconic, having been featured in numerous comics as well as the hugely popular Justice League (2001-2004) animated series. The character’s backstory can be seen as convoluted at times; it is essential to note that the version of the character that many know from the animated series is not the exact portrayal of the character that will be featured in Black Adam (2022).

Where Black Adam is physically the same being as he was in Ancient Egypt, Hawkman is an ancient, reincarnated spirit. Hawkman’s physical form changes depending on what body he takes on; however, his spirit is Prince Khufu of the 15th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt. The DC Comics Encyclopedia notes that Prince Khufu has been “reborn countless times throughout the ages.”

Aldis Hodge will specifically portray Carter Hall in Black Adam (2022). Carter was an archaeologist active in the 1940s. This places Hall in the wave of archaeology after Howard Carter rediscovered Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. However, more importantly, it sets him in place to fight alongside the likes of Doctor Fate and The Atom during World War II.
