5 Interesting Facts About Doctor Fate
My favorite DC stories embrace the supernatural elements of the universe. I love characters like Zatanna and John Constantine. However, my favorite magic practitioner is Doctor Fate. The aesthetic of the character is incredible, but it was the backstory of the first Doctor Fate that captured me. The idea of an archaeologist working with a spirit per se, to help battle inter-dimensional evils and sorcerers. It is an exciting concept, to say the least!
The character rose recently in popularity due to both NetherRealm Studios’ Injustice video game franchise and the news that former James Bond actor, Pierce Brosnan will be portraying the character next to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam in the film, Black Adam (2022). In honor of one of our favorite supernatural characters coming to the big screen, here are 5 interesting facts about Doctor Fate!

Doctor Fate first appeared in MORE FUN COMICS #55. The first to carry the mantle was archaeologist Kent Nelson. While exploring the Ur Valley of Egypt with Sven Nelson they awoke Nabu, the Lord of Order! Noxious gas released when the chamber was opened killed Sven Nelson. The DC Comics Encyclopedia denotes that after this, Nabu took Kent under his wing and taught him the ways of sorcery.
4. Doctor Fate’s Power Comes From A Magical Connection
Kent Nelson takes on the mantle of Doctor Fate after being bequeathed the magical artifacts of Nabu, the Lord of Order. These artifacts include the iconic helmet, a cloak, and an amulet. After accepting these artifacts that are infused with incredible magical powers Nelson became an operator of the Lords of Order and more importantly, a human avatar for the will of Nabu.
3. Several Different People Have Donned The Helmet
There have been many different people who have taken on the mantle since the character’s introduction in 1940. One of the most prominent is Inza Cramer. She was the wife of Kent Nelson and served as Doctor Fate after a series of events saw Nabu reincarnating the couple. Another interesting one to serve temporarily was Steel Maxum. The stripper was chosen by the Lords of Order in the animated film Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay (2018). However, he only held the mantle a short while after illustrating his judgment was questionable.
2. It Is Difficult To Be Doctor Fate
When the helmet of Nabu is worn by the acting Doctor Fate they are subject to Nabu’s influence. This can work out well, with both parties working in concert and keeping the universe safe from threats. However, this can also be a struggle. A notable instance is when Hector Hall (Hawkman and Hawkgirl’s son) took on the mantle, he was in a constant struggle to keep Nabu’s persistent influence from overwhelming him.
1. Doctor Fate Is A Founding Member Of The Justice Society Of America
In an interview with Screen Rant discussing his upcoming film Black Adam (2022), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stated, “We will introduce you to that, the world of JSA.” The Justice Society of America is the spiritual precursor to what would become the Justice League. Created during the events of World War II, The Justice Society of America aimed to combat Hitler’s forces. It was founded by Doctor Fate, The Atom, The Spectre, Hourman I, and Sandman I as listed in the DC Comics Encyclopedia. The introduction of the Justice Society of America in Black Adam (2022) could hint at some very exciting characters and storylines to come!
