A well-known pirate has recently made his way back into the news. Johnny Depp, probably best known for his role as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, recently returned to the spotlight during his defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. Following judgement being entered in that case, there has been a lot of speculation regarding when and if Johnny Depp will return to the big screen. This article examines five characters that would be a good fit for Johnny Depp in the MCU.
5. Nightmare
First on this list is one of Dr. Strange’s main villains. Nightmare first appeared in 1962 in Strange Tales #110. As a sort of twisted character, he would certainly be a fit for Depp given the breadth of his previous roles (such as the Mad Hatter and Willy Wonka). Additionally, Nightmare has not appeared in any Marvel Studios productions to date.

4. Doctor Doom
Another villain that could potentially enter the MCU is second on this list. Doctor Doom is one of the most notable characters of the Fantastic Four series. With the Fantastic Four film announced for 2024, this could be a place for Depp to be introduced to the MCU. Doctor Doom has previously appeared in the Fantastic Four films of the 2000s.

3. Ghost Rider
Ghost Rider may soon be returning to the MCU. Played by Nicolas Cage in the 2007 and 2011 films, it would be interesting to see Johnny Depp take on the role. Admittedly, it would be cool to see Johnny Depp riding a motorcycle with a leather jacket.

2. Gambit
While Gambit may be an unlikely choice for Johnny Depp in the MCU, it would be a fun choice for sure. Gambit’s first appearance was in Uncanny X-Men #266. Depp may be a little older than the typical Gambit, it is still not hard to imagine Depp playing the character. Prior to the deal with Disney, a movie involving Gambit was planned to be the fourteenth film in the X-Men franchise.

1. Mephisto
Last on this list is Mephisto, a character Marvel fans have speculated would soon enter the MCU. Many hoped that he would appear in WandaVision, but were ultimately disappointed. This devilish figure first appeared in Silver Surfer #3 in 1968. Depp would be a perfect fit for the role of Mephisto, as fans already know that Depp can play a seemingly likeable character while also giving off a menacing aura.
