Ahsoka is due to hit screens any day now, and one of the biggest reveals from the trailer is Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati’s impactful orange lightsabers.  One of the rarest variants, it’s the first time we’ve seen this particular color in live-action. But others in Star Wars have taken up the orange blade.

 10. Yaddle

According to Legends, Yaddle originally had a green lightsaber, but then she was imprisoned in a pit on the planet of Koba for two hundred years. When she finally freed herself, Yaddle was made a Jedi Master and she constructed a new weapon with an orange blade. But Yaddle’s orange lightsaber is nowhere to be found in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. So it seems that Disney has removed it from the canon.

Polvin Kut was Yaddle’s mentor and Jedi Master. He fell to the dark side when he came face to face with the warlord who murdered his family. The battle went against the pair, and Kut was killed in front of his apprentice. His story isn’t canon, but it is referenced that he was Yaddle’s master in some official texts.

 8. Tulak Hord

The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic villain. Interestingly, his tangerine lightsaber went through the hands of two Sith Lords (Tulak Hord and Darth Marr), but neither bled the Kyber crystal, and it stayed its original color.

 7. Dorjander Kace And The Mandalorian Jedi Knights

Disillusioned by the Republic, Kase, and his followers defected to our favorite helmet-wearing planet and formed a militia called The Mandalorian Jedi Knights. Most of the group, including the Falleen, Jaska, and Kase favored orange blades. You can read about them in the  Knights of the Old Republic graphic novel series.

6. Soon Bayts

Soon Bayts was one of the Jedi killed by General Grievous. The blue lightsaber the General took as a memento was the second of Bayts’ career. Before The Clone Wars, he had the rare orange. Soon Bayts was created for the Jedi Council: Acts of War series. His name was a practical joke by Randy Stradley on the editor (put Master in front and you’ll see why) Sue Rostoni. The pun was missed and it went to print.

 5. Yoshi Raph-Elan

A pre-Clone Wars Jedi who appeared in Star Wars (1998) graphic novel series.  Raph-Elan was lucky enough to have the rare orange kyber crystal in his saber. He had a short romance with a princess, but like Obi-Wan Kenobi, ultimately chose the Jedi.

4. Torhaa Phaa

A dualist from the Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures video game. The Togruta functioned as an NPC, but unfortunately, apart from his rare lightsaber, the game gave players little detail about his backstory.

3. Lar Le'Ung

One of Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Masters from The New Jedi Order. (Star Wars: Invasion) The Pau’an taught at the Jedi Praxeum and wielded an orange lightsaber. It didn’t help against the Yuuzhan Vong, who killed him in one of the opening salvos of the war.

2. Kyle Katarn

Appearing in the Star Wars Jedi Knight games and The New Jedi Order books, Kyle Katarn apparently never sat through Obi-Wan Kenobi's lecture about looking after a lightsaber, as he burned through all the colors of the rainbow, including orange. The lightsaber originally belonged to a dark Jedi called Yun, although it’s yellow when it first appears, in Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith (1998) the blade changes color. Presumably, Kyle switched out the crystals, or bled the yellow?

1. Cal Kestis

Cal Kestis is the first canon character to wield an orange lightsaber in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. However, players could only get the rare variant if they’d preordered the game, so it wasn’t widely available. Cal also features in the popular Star Wars: Jedi Survivor video game.

There’s no indication of what the orange kyber crystal means about the person on the other end of the blade. It might be a coincidence that many of the Expanded Universe characters who held the flaming blade rebelled or fell to the dark side. But there’s also a great number of Jedi with strong connections to the living Force in this list (Yaddle, Raph Elan, etc). Rey Skywalker made a yellow lightsaber for herself, the color of the Jedi Temple Guards, a little Sith bleeding and that could also explain the color change.

In Star Wars: Visions season two episode Sith, ex-Sith Lola created a yellow and a red blade for both sides of her personality, our new force users have orange. Perhaps the real message of the orange lightsabers is about achieving balance.
