10 Of The Best Self Published Romantasy Authors On Kindle Unlimited
The Romantasy genre has exploded in the last few years, with many authors on the best-seller list starting as self-published. It’s become so commonplace that traditionally published authors don’t always give up their independence completely. New York Times best seller, Jennifer L. Armentrout, who is signed with Harper Collins and trending imprint Entangled, still self-publishes some of her work.
If a reader is savvy, they can find a top title before it hits the mainstream. Lauren Roberts (Powerless) was picked up by Simon & Schuster after going viral on TikTok. Now is not the time to turn your nose up at the self-published label. These are our picks from the selection available on Kindle.
Normally when we collate these lists, it’s in some form of ranking, but readers know that choosing between favourite authors is like picking between family. These are in alphabetical order instead, because they are all fantastic.

10. R.D Baker – 'Shadow Drawn'
A very spicy take on angels and demons. The first book, The Shadow and the Draw was a Booktok favorite. There are shades of the Omegaverse, (if you don’t know what that is, it is probably best you stay innocent and definitely avoid AO3) but it’s a very unusual fantasy, especially if you’re after something different from the usual medieval fae style that’s the flavor of the moment.
9. A. L Brody – 'Dating And Dismemberment'
A. L Brody aka Jason Pinter is a Booktok megastar who rose to fame making parody videos of men writing women. His satirical monster rom-com has just been picked up by a publisher, so he’s not going to be self-published for much longer. Read it while you can still tell all your friends that you liked him before he hit it big.
Dating and Dismemberment is a little bit different from everything else on this list, it’s heartwarming as well as sidesplittingly funny. And don’t forget the monsters.
8. Samatha R Goode – 'The Fated Creations Trilogy'
It’s unbelievable that this is the author’s debut series. Perfect for the fans of tropes as Goode has squeezed a fair number onto the pages. The author very much leans into the romance part of romantasy, so if you love an angsty coupling, this is the one.
Fated mates, slow burn, found family, cool twist on the vampire legend.
7. Lisette Marshall – 'The Fae Isles'
It has a broody dark-haired morally grey male protagonist with wings. That’s a moneymaker right there. Outside of Creon, who is also mute, the magic system in this book is unique. It won’t be like anything else you’ve read. There’s one more book due out on 2nd April 2024, and a spin due to follow in 2025.
6. Geneva Monroe – 'The Sun Serpent Saga'
Two out of the (we’re assuming) three books have been released, and we’re still waiting on news of the next one. This series is about a fire dancer and a secret Prince, but the author takes us through a variety of fantasy landscapes from pirate ships to treacherous cliff climbs. The story is always moving. And Monroe’s cover art is epic. This author needs more love, as she’s not had the attention she deserves.
5. H.R Moore – 'Shadow And Ash'
A ruler can’t find her dragon eggs. What’s not to love? Moore wrote a complex plot of intrigue and politics woven into romantasy. The love interest isn’t easy to spot right away in this book, but the ending is satisfying. A great duology, with two spin-offs in the same world.
4. Raven Storm – 'The Dark Prince'
Raven Storm normally dabbles in dark fantasy, feral dragon shapeshifter novels. The Dark Prince is her tamest offering, but it’s absolutely charming. A stand-alone about a scarred Prince who picks a wife to break a spell. Beauty and the beast-esque but the main couple are so freaking cute that you’ll be drawing fan art, and ordering masks on Amazon by the time you’ve finished it.
3. Nisha J. Tuli - 'Artefacts Of Ouranos'
The Bachelor, but make it fantasy. Ten women compete for the heart of the Aurora King, but is it the prize they think it is? There are plenty of Fae, including their court systems. If you liked Throne of Glass, this will be up your street.
Artefacts of Ouranos is in the process of being picked up by one of the big five, thanks to the support of Booktok. So, get it now, while it's still self-published.
2. Olivia Wildenstein – 'The Kingdom Of Crows'
In the first book, the female lead has to collect crow statues and impress Dante, the prince she fancies. It seems like a simple quest novel, but then Wildenstein throws everything into chaos. This is the ultimate slow-burn fantasy, where the reader’s heart is dangled like a thread. But the endearing side characters ease the pain a little.
Crows, more crows (can’t have enough) ….oh and a snake.
1. Sarah K. L. Wilson – 'Dragon School'
If you’re one of the massive Fourth Wing fanbase going cold turkey on dragons then this is a great way to get your fix in between books. It has a military school, a female protagonist with a disability that gives her chronic pain, and sassy dragons. These books are YA, so don’t have the spice level of everything else in the list (or Fourth Wing), but there are lots of them, fourteen at the last count.
