5 Reasons Why The Clones Are The Best Characters In ‘Star Wars’
Whether you love or hate the prequel trilogy there is no denying that the films gave us the best characters in all of Star Wars: the clones. They were first introduced in Episode II- Attack of the Clones, and at first, it seemed like they were going to be background characters only there to support the Jedi in their battle against the Sith. It turned out however that George Lucas and Dave Filoni recognized the true potential of these characters and gave us Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, both series being hugely successful among fans and one of the main reasons is the clones. They are some of the most complex characters we have gotten in the entire franchise, and I want to take a look at five reasons why they are arguably the best characters in Star Wars. WARNING!! Contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch seasons one and two!!
5. Moral Compass
It is no secret that many of the characters in Star Wars are lacking a moral compass. The Jedi refuse to consider anything that might go against their ridiculous Jedi Code even if it is for the greater good, and the Sith are the same just on the darker side of that argument. The clones show time and time again that they are willing to go against orders if they know that something is wrong. This leads to some really important discussions amongst the Jedi in The Clone Wars and makes the execution of Order 66 even more impactful. We see this the most in The Bad Batch season two as the clones start to recognize the issues with the Empire, and they start to fight back against the orders they are being given.

4. Compassion
One of the most amazing things about the clones is their compassion for others. They routinely go above and beyond to help the locals of whatever planet they are fighting on at the time. One of my favorite examples of this is in season one episode 20 of The Clone Wars: two clones discover a young Twi’lek child who needs their help. After she is reunited with her people, the clones learn that the word “Nerra” she has been using to refer to them means brother in her native language. The clones’ compassion is also shown throughout The Bad Batch as Clone Force 99 risks everything to help locals and other clones who have turned their backs on the Galactic Empire.
3. Character Development
Every character in Star Wars goes through some pretty intense character development regardless of when they are introduced in the franchise. I would argue though that the clones go through the most character development, and it is one of the reasons they are such amazing characters. When they are first introduced in Episode II they are nothing more than enhanced soldiers meant to aid the Jedi. By the time we reach the end of The Clone Wars, they are beloved characters whose execution of Order 66 not only feels like a betrayal of the Jedi but also a betrayal of the clones themselves. They are fully developed characters who have their own wants, desires, and relationships and are forced to kill the people they care about the most. This is especially heartbreaking when we see Rex attempting to execute the Order against Ahsoka.
2. Loyalty
The clones’ most endearing quality is their loyalty. They are not only loyal to the Jedi (until they are forced not to be), but they are also loyal to each other. This is shown over and over again throughout The Clones Wars and The Bad Batch. When the clones working with Anakin and Obi-Wan hear that Asajj Ventress is planning to attack Kamino they ask permission to go and help because it is their home and they want to help their brothers. In The Bad Batch, Clone Force 99 risks capture multiple times just to rescue Omega once they learn that she is a clone like them. Their loyalty knows no bounds and whether they have just met someone or known them for years they have their loyalty until the end.
1. Unique Personalities
My favorite thing about the clones is their unique personalities. They were created to be copies of Jango Fett that follow orders and die if needed, nothing more. And yet they have each created their own unique personalities and given themselves names which they use in place of the characterless numbers that they were assigned at “birth”. The clones show time and time again that they are not mindless droids, and that is easily the best thing about them!
