Will 'Star Wars: Resistance' Get A Season 3?

Star Wars: Resistance

As Star Wars continues to be a global phenomenon, one cannot help but wonder how the world forgot about Star Wars: Resistance. Debuting on October 7, 2018 and concluding on January 28, 2019, the animated series followed Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot in the New Republic, who was tasked by Poe Dameron with rooting out a First Order spy on the Colossus refueling station on the water world of Castilon. Accompanied by BB-8, Kaz became acquainted with Team Fireball, a team of pilots and mechanics who live on the refueling station. Alongside the team, Kaz helps get their titular ship, the Fireball up and running so that he can use it to compete in the Colossus’s sky races. As Kaz learns about the residents of the Colossus and helps them with their various day-to-day struggles, he also comes into direct conflict with the First Order, who are trying to take control of the station and use it as a base of operations against the New Republic.

Without going into spoilers, Resistance gives Star Wars fans a fresh and relaxing experience as they witness the days in the lives of a likable cast of characters on the edge of a galaxy-spanning war. As the First Order’s plot unfolds, we see Kaz and the rest of Team Fireball come face to face with their pasts and have to make difficult decisions as the First Order prepares to strike the New Republic. With a unique cel-shaded art style, fun racing sequences, solid character development, attentive world-building, and excellent vocal performances, Resistance is an underrated addition to the Star Wars mythos.

Unfortunately, due to lackluster marketing and the coinciding releases of The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian, Jedi: Fallen Order, and Season 7 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the back half of Resistance’s second season was completely overshadowed, leaving very little impact on the overall fandom. With Lucasfilm’s focus on The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch, Resistance has sadly been left in the dust in terms of popularity. That being said, I do not think one final season of Resistance is completely off the table. After all, the fandom thought that The Clone Wars would not get its planned final season, only to be given said final season in response to high demand. Could the same thing happen with Resistance? Lucasfilm clearly has not forgotten about the series, due to various names and elements from Resistance appearing in other Star Wars projects, including The Bad Batch, Squadrons, and The High Republic. So if there are enough people in Lucasfilm and the fandom who want Resistance to get its final season, I could see that being approved along with the various other animated projects that Lucasfilm is currently working on.

Star Wars: Resistance is a unique series due to its laidback nature, self-containment, and dedication to character-based humor and drama. Wrongfully buried by all the other Star Wars projects, the little series deserves one final season to wrap up its various unresolved plot threads and character arcs. I would love to see how the season would tie into the end of the sequel trilogy and how the new status quo would affect the residents of the Colossus.
