10, Star Wars Poe Dameron Vol 1: Black Squadron (2016-2018)

Poe Dameron comic

Set before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Poe Dameron is just as rogueish as in the movies. If you’ve enjoyed any of the X-Wing books, then this will be right up your street. It’s fun, action-filled, and gives plenty of backstories, to Poe and many Rebellion side characters.

9. Star Wars Vol 2: Showdown On Smuggler’s Moon (2015-2019)

Showdown On Smuggler's moon comic

This is a truly action-packed set of graphic novels from Jason Aaron. Lighter than some of Star Wars’ other material but just as engaging. Luke Skywalker is following journals left to him by Obi-Wan Kenobi after the events of Star Wars: Episode V - A New Hope. Instead of nice quiet training and reflection, he gets a messy encounter with the Hutts, and poor Han gets sandwiched between an angry Leia and his….er wife?

8. Star Wars: Thrawn (2018)

Written by Jodie Houser, this is an adaption of the Timothy Zahn novel Star Wars: Thrawn. The comic chronicles Thrawn’s rise to power, and introduces the popular Eli Vanto. If you’ve just watched Ahsoka and want Thrawn’s backstory, you’ll find it here. The artwork (by Luke Ross) is exceptional.

7. Star Wars: Darth Vader Vol 1 (2015 -2016)

Set in the aftermath of Star Wars: Episode V – A New Hope. This series was penned by Kieron Gillen and is the first appearance of Doctor Aphra. Written from the viewpoint of the Sith Lord himself, we get to see him scheming against the Emperor, while chasing down rebels after Yavin. All while still grieving for Padme and wondering who that mysterious boy from Tatooine was.

6. Star Wars: Darth Maul (2017)

An essential read for any Star Wars fan as it fills in the history of several characters, including Cad Bane and Aurra Sing. Despite his brief appearance in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul has become one of the most complex characters in the whole saga. This graphic novel, set before the prequels gives fans a taste of what is to come. It shows Maul struggling with his darker impulses and Palpatine’s control. It’s worth downloading for the artwork alone.

5. Star Wars Vol 1: The Destiny Path (2020)

The Destiny Path comic

This series fills in the gap between episodes V and VI, created when Splinter of the Mind’s Eye was removed from the canon. Luke is struggling to come to terms with his parentage and Leia is heartbroken. Lando is cracking jokes.

A great new piece of storytelling by old-hand Charles Soule, one of the best writers in Star Wars at the moment.

4. Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The Old Republic

The Old Republic comic

A prequel to the KOTOR game (set in Taris), with some of the characters making cameo appearances. The comic is written in a detective style and unveils more political behind-the-scenes activity within the Jedi. With The Acolyte on its way, this may be a useful read as it gives more perspective on the failings of the Order.

3. Star Wars: Darth Vader: Dark Lord Of The Sith Vol.4 Fortress Vader (2017-2018)

In this series, we discover how Vader created his infamous fortress on Mustafar. Set right after Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith but has nods to all the prequels. We see Vader at his most ruthless, and most tormented. Unsurprisingly another Charles Soule book.

2. Star Wars Legends Epic Collection Vol 1: The Clone Wars

Unfortunately, this Dark Horse comic is no longer canon, but it’s still worth a read. This book is essentially Star Wars: The Clone Wars expanded into graphic novel form, with Shaak Ti, Mace Windu, Aayla Secura, Count Dooku, and Yoda all getting plenty of panel time. The comic shows off just how devious the Sith were during this era, and how oblivious the Jedi were!

1. Star Wars: Doctor Aphra Vol 1, 5,6,7 (2016- 2019)

Doctor Aphra comic

Billed as female Indiana Jones in space, this morally grey LGBTQ character became an instant hit and it’s hoped that Doctor Aphra will eventually make it into live action. The artwork and the storytelling are equally stunning, intersecting with a host of the main cast from Darth Vader to Crimson Dawn. Her book has been nominated/won GLAAD media awards and it's definitely worth a look, especially if you can pick it up for free!
