Why 'The Lord Of The Rings' Movies Should Be On Everyone's Holiday Watchlist
Christmas movies have been a tradition for many people throughout the month of December. These movies tend to have the same story but are just a little bit different from each other. There are also those somewhat unconventional Christmas movies. If Die Hard is considered to be a Christmas movie, then so is The Lord of The Rings trilogy. These movies are Christmas movies and should be on everyone’s holiday watchlist.
First, every good Christmas movie has elves, and The Lord of the Rings happens to have a lot of Elves. Legolas of the Woodland Realm is part of the Fellowship and helps Frodo on his way to Mordor. Early in their journey, they also encounter the Elves of Rivendell. One of the most famous Elves of them all, Elrond, creates the Fellowship. They also encounter the Elves of Lothlorien and Galadriel. While these Elves have ethereal beauty to them, they're still Elves, even if not in the conventional Christmas movie sense. They are not small and do not help Santa make toys for everyone, but they still do have a purpose.

What’s a Christmas movie without a magical old man with a cool white beard? The Lord of the Rings features a wizard named Gandalf, who is cooler than Santa. Gandalf helps aid the fellowship on their journey until he is struck down by a Balrog. He is able to come back from the dead and transform himself into an even more powerful wizard. While Santa can deliver presents to everyone in the world in one night, his power is nothing like the power Gandalf possesses. Gandalf is able to break Saruman’s spell that has taken over King Theoden. He is also able to bring back the Rohirrim, and turn the Battle of Helm’s Deep back in their favor. While Santa is a jolly fellow, who makes many people happy one day a year, Gandalf helps bring back peace to Middle-earth.
You also can’t have Christmas without presents! Frodo’s task is to return the One Ring to the fiery pits of Mount Doom. This ring is very expensive and could be considered a powerful present. Frodo is on a journey to return it to where it was created, so it can be destroyed. While this isn’t the way gifts are normally done, it's the only way that Middle-earth can truly have peace, and that’s the greatest gift of all.
And no holiday is complete without friends. While the Fellowship is an unlikely group of friends, by the end of their journey, they are closer than ever. Their journey may be unconventional for a Christmas movie, but their trauma bonding is not. The holidays are a time when conflicts and past trauma come to light, and these movies show just that. The Fellowship would bond over their journey and past experiences.
Out of everything else, the biggest reason these movies could be considered Christmas movies is that the Fellowship sets out on their quest to destroy the ring on December 25th, the day Christmas is celebrated. J. R. R. Tolkien was a devout Catholic, so he may have done this intentionally. There are also various Christ-like themes within the movies, like how Frodo bears the burden of the ring like the cross, and Gandalf’s death and resurrection. You can’t get more Christmasy than that.
