After much speculation, Harrison Ford’s place in the MCU was finally announced. The actor will be taking on the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross after William Hurt’s passing earlier this year. However, with a role in Captain America: New World Order and Thunderbolts, it begs to question of where the character will go from here.

Ross has a history of antagonism in the MCU. He had a hand in the Super Soldier Serum recreation efforts in the early days. Since having a hand in creating the Hulk, and subsequently making the man his number-one enemy, he has been a thorn in the side of superheroes. The most notable moment as of late would be the Sokovia Accords and how they ripped apart the Avengers as a team. In the timeline, Ross was last seen at Tony Stark’s funeral in Avengers: Endgame.

We know the next time he will be seen will be in Captain America: New World Order, now played by Ford. But, after all this time, his alter ego has yet to be seen. In the comics, Thunderbolt Ross becomes the Red Hulk after teaming up with M.O.D.O.K., the Leader and a friend of Bruce Banner, to fight the man in World War Hulk. Those allies of his take the Hulk’s dead body to siphon the energy out of, putting it in Ross instead.

That likely won’t be the MCU’s path, but something similar could follow. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law broadened the Hulk family name with the titular character and a brief shot of Hulk’s son Skaar. The concept of Inteligencia was also pulled from comics about the Red Hulk. So introducing this side of Ross’s character to the MCU is within the realm of a perfect setup.

Ross could take on a new degree of the antagonist role in the upcoming Captain America film, much like the type Bucky Barnes was, an unintentional role due to lack of self-control. Becoming what you hate is a classic trope that could play well with how the MCU has developed Ross thus far. Knowing that he has a role in Thunderbolts and was even a part of the antihero team in the comics, it seems all the more possible.

Captain America: New World Order is currently set to theatrically premiere on May 3rd, 2024. Not much else is known at this time. Marvel Studios is carefully keeping things under wraps.
