What To Watch And Read To Prepare For 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever'

We are a few weeks away from the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This is the sequel to the hit 2018 film, Black Panther. It told the story of T’Challa and his role as the Black Panther, the leader and protector of Wakanda. Black Panther is a relatively new character and has not been in many works since his debut. Here is everything to consume before the sequel premieres.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

We were introduced to the character of T’Challa/Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War. His father, T’Chaka was speaking about the Sokovia Accords when the building was bombed. He did not make it, and T’Challa took over the role of the Black Panther. T’Challa went after Bucky, who was accused of causing the bombing. Once T’Challa realized it was not Bucky’s fault, he let him come to Wakanda for deprogramming.

This is where we got to know T’Challa and the country of Wakanda. At the film's beginning, Wakanda was hidden from the world, but that changed by the end. They were ready to present themselves to the world, and share their technological advances. T’Challa was challenged by his long-lost cousin, Erik Killmonger, for the role of the Black Panther. We also met the people around T’Challa like his sister Shuri, a genius scientist and inventor, and his mother, Queen Ramonda. There is also Nakia, his ex-lover and undercover agent for Wakanda, Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje, and CIA Agent Everett K. Ross. The end credits scene showed us that Bucky has been recovering in Wakanda, and was given a new robotic arm from Shuri.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

This film brought all our heroes together. T’Challa offered his services and Wakanda in the fight against Thanos and his army. With the power of his army, along with the Avengers, they were able to do some damage to Thanos’s army. This was until Thanos snapped his fingers and people start vanishing. T’Challa is one of these people who were “dusted.”

With T’Challa gone, Okoye had taken over Wakanda for the time being. While the characters we are familiar with from Wakanda did not have a huge presence, T’Challa’s entrance at the end of the film is one of the best.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier (2021)

Ayo, a Dora Milaje soldier, appeared in the Disney+ show and has been the only character we have seen from Wakanda since Endgame. She revealed that she worked with Bucky while he was rehabilitating in Wakanda. During this brief appearance, we learn more about this warrior and who she is.

While the story of Namor in Wakanda Forever appears to be an original one, reading up on the character and his background would be helpful going into the movie.

This series introduced Namor as a hero instead of the villain he was always known as. We see him team up with characters like Iron Man, and even his former foes, The Fantastic Four.

King In Black: Namor (2021) By Kurt Busiek

The mini-series gave us a deeper look into the lore of Atlantis. It featured flashbacks of a teenage Namor, and Attuma, another character we will see in Wakanda Forever.

Iron Heart (2019) By Brian Michael Bendis

Another character being introduced in Wakanda Forever is Riri Williams aka Ironheart. This will be the first time we see this new character ahead of her solo show.

Riri Williams had some big shoes to fill, literally. She stepped into the role of Iron Man and aimed to carry on the legacy of Tony Stark. She dealt with her first big Marvel villain and got help from a Tony Stark AI.

After the unexpected death of Chadwick Boseman, fans were assured that the role of T’Challa would not be recast. However, there will be a new Black Panther, and fans have been speculating on who that might be. While we have not seen these characters in much content since their debut in Black Panther, it will be exciting to visit Wakanda again soon.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premieres in theaters on November 11th.
