Warner Bros. Wants To Be Back On Top, And It Could Start With Getting Christopher Nolan Back
Warner Bros. is unquestionably an iconic studio with 100 years of history under its belt. The game has been changing with the era of the Internet, and the company has tried to keep pace with the trends. Individual streaming platforms have taken the world by storm, especially during the early stages of the pandemic. They have changed the motion picture game in ways that aren’t always for the better; communication is key in implementation, and a lack of such has fostered a rocky relationship with the company and filmmakers.
Things have been changing with Warner Bros. Warner Media was acquired by Discovery and CEO David Zaslav, who in turn installed new employees for fresh blood. In a special feature with Variety, new studio chiefs Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca gave a bit of insight into their goals for the future and the direction they are aiming for with Warner Bros. Discovery.

According to De Luca, the pair saw their time at “MGM as an opportunity to test [their] theory about original movies with signature filmmakers, and supporting first-timers.” He explained, “The legacy studios seemed gun-shy in taking original swings, and we thought they were leaving a lot of talent and material on the table.”
Healing relationships with artists is something the pair finds important. Abdy states that they “are through the worst of it.” It is still a work in progress, however, and everything is not mended with filmmaking icon Christopher Nolan, who they’re “hoping to get…back.” Nolan publicly left Warner Bros. during the AT&T era.
De Luca even explained a bit of what they do behind the scenes for their creatives, “After the AT&T years, everyone felt a bit of battered child syndrome. We have one of the best film libraries in existence, so we started inviting our filmmakers to come and choose a movie that inspires them and talk about it with our staff.” The company is putting forth effort for all of its creatives. In a similar vein of support, a no strings attached royalty check was reportedly paid out to Nolan for his 2020 film with the company Tenet.
Everything takes time, especially after the rocky road filmmakers like Nolan went over with the company. As the relationship heals and Abdy and De Luca work their magic, Warner Bros. Discovery will come closer to rising back to the top should things work out the way they expect. Reception seems to be positive thus far.
