Garflied and Grumpy Cat

In early 2017, I heard rumours that I and other die-hard fans of the internet’s favourite grumpy feline might be teaming up with another iconic feline from my childhood. Not gonna lie. I got pretty excited.

Garfield was a regular thing for my sisters and me growing up. I would eagerly look forward to the full-colour comic strips in the Saturday paper, and one of my younger sisters would regularly borrow Garfield comic compilations from a neighbour across the street. So Garfield remained a fixture even as we grew up for a while. I even had a thing where I constantly got my sister Garfield-themed gifts. So when, in 2017, I learned there would be a Garfield-Grumpy Cat comic book team-up, I got pretty excited.

RELATED:

The two cats share a lot of similarities. Garfield hates Mondays; Grumpy Cat hates, well, everything. They both have their own forms of popular media, whether it be television, movies, comics, or internet content. Their joint comic series, a collaboration between kaboom! and Dynamite encompasses three issues, released in August, September, and October of 2017. (side note: between copies for my sister and me, I’m pretty sure I cleaned the local comic shop out of their supply).

The series tells the story of Grumpy Cat and Garfield as they battle the sinister Pet Mogul Corporation’s experiments that aim to make cats more like lovable dogs. After all, what better subjects to test than two of the grumpiest cats on the planet?

The first issue starts with both cats annoyed by their respective siblings, Odie and Pokey. The siblings unwittingly get roped into the whole snatch-and-grab of the two felines, and the issue ends with Grumpy, and Garfield tossed into a room together, instantly hating each other because it saves time.

The second issue starts with a dour feline staring contest and some grumpy introductions, then cuts to Odie and Pokey as they meet up and try to follow the trails of their siblings. Then it goes back to Grumpy and Garfield, who continue to trade barbs until they realize they are being watched. They pause long enough to fool the guard and escape their cell- even running into their siblings briefly- but they are quickly recaptured and brought back inside to begin the experiments. The experiments initially worked, and the cats have taken on canine personalities. Meanwhile, Odie and Pokey have rallied some cops to investigate the corporation, but they are horrified when they encounter two well-behaved felines instead of their grumpy siblings.

The third issue opens with the changed cats back in their homes and their siblings disgruntled with the changes. Even Garfield’s human, Jon, is puzzled by the change. Back at Pet Mogul, the evil men celebrate the experiments’ success, but one of them is concerned about potential flaws. One such flaw is that the cats were returned to their homes instead of kept at the corporation’s studio. While minions are sent out to recapture them, Pokey tries to bring out Grumpy’s original personality by showing her depressing news, but to no avail. Then déjà vu hits, and the cats are recaptured and returned to the studio. But the CEO hasn’t realized something- there was a time limit on the conversion. The two cats revert to their original personalities, attack their captors, and turn the tools of the experiment onto the evil CEO. The story closes with plans to ship Nermal to Antarctica and the possibility that a Grumpy Cat-Garfield friendship might happen after all.
