In a galaxy far, far away, The Mandalorian reigns supreme. According to Parrot Analytics, Season 1 clocked an astronomical 5.3 billion minutes of viewership, and Season 2 soared to an even higher rate of 8.3 billion minutes. Newer releases such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, and Andor have yet to reach the same heights, although future series installments could see an uptick in popularity.

No single element defines the breakout success of The Mandalorian. The show’s compelling cast, exciting action sequences, and fresh storyline all play a role. Yet Grogu deserves credit for establishing the central dynamic and serving as a motivation for the show’s protagonist, Din Djarin

Grogu’s presence always lights up the screen. Affectionately nicknamed “Baby Yoda,” the little green guy wins fans over with his adorable quirks, love for food, and heroic moments. Beyond his cuteness, fans also wonder about his mysterious origins. Hopefully, there will be answers to these questions in Season 3.

Where Does Grogu Come From?

Countless species populate the Star Wars universe. From Rodians to Wookiees, Twi’Leks to Neimodians, there are an endless number of living beings spread across planets. Each species has plenty of information available about its characteristics, history, and biological makeup.

By contrast, Grogu belongs to an unnamed species with only two other named members: Yoda and Yaddle. A slow aging process and Force sensitivity appear to be the only defining traits of this species. Not even their planet of origin has been revealed.

Given the rarity of his species, Grogu might not encounter other living members of his kind. However, Grogu could potentially discover a connection with Yoda or Yaddle. Can these characters share a familial connection or even exact DNA if Grogu turns out to be a clone?

What Happened During Order 66?

Order 66 resulted in the destruction of the Jedi Order. Under Palpatine’s influence, clone troopers fought Jedi across several worlds. Anakin Skywalker led the fight in the Jedi Temple and killed Jedi younglings in the process.

Despite his youth, Grogu managed to survive Order 66. With the help of Luke Skywalker, Grogu managed to recall a memory of the Jedi Temple massacre. However, the flashback only showed a moment of three Jedi fighting back against an onslaught of clone troopers.

The identity of Grogu’s savior could be one part of a larger unveiling of what happened during Order 66 and its aftermath. High-ranking Jedi Council members like Obi-Wan Kenobi remain likely contenders. Additional possibilities include the droid R2-D2, Jedi librarian Jocasta Nu, and Barriss Offee.

What Happened Before Din Djarin Met Grogu?

Despite his cuddly demeanor, Grogu occasionally demonstrates a violent side. During a moment of stress, Grogu Force-choked Cara Dune. The Child also killed a man who attempted to steal from Din Djarin.

These outbursts could be chalked up to youthful energy. At 50 years old, Grogu remains an infant by his species’ standards. Luke Skywalker believed Grogu required more training to maintain control of his Force abilities.

However, Grogu could have experienced harmful experiences that have yet to be revealed. The space between Order 66 and Grogu’s meeting with Din Djarin is not been completely filled in, and Grogu’s memory appears to be incomplete. Past traumatic encounters with the Empire and especially Moff Gideon could come into play. These encounters could also give a clearer picture to explain Grogu’s occasional dark nature and how Grogu ended up where he was when the story began.

Most of The Mandalorian Season 3 will focus on Din Djarin’s return to Mandalore as he learns how to wield the Darksaber and faces the consequences of removing his helmet. It is possible that Mando will adopt a less rigid form of the Mandalorian code

What Mando shares with Grogu is the need to grapple with the past. Both characters face enemies they would rather leave behind. Instead, they must look toward their history to put away past challenges and painful memories.
