WARNING: SPOILERS FOR TALES OF THE JEDI

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi is an imaginative anthology that shows us the duality of Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku and the choices they made. Created and written by Dave Filoni, the six shorts split the time equally, showing Ahsoka’s life before and after Order 66. The other half gives us insight into Dooku’s past relationships and shows us his slow descent to the dark side.

Dooku’s character first appeared in Attack of the Clones, and his character was further expanded on in The Clone Wars animated series. However, his past has been left a mystery. Episodes 2 thru 6 of this series gave us a deeper understanding of the mind of the fallen Jedi without painting him out to be perfect. The three-episode arc jumped from a mission with his then-apprentice Qui-Gon Jinn to a mission on Raxus (the future capital of the Confederacy of Independent Systems) with Mace Windu. It closed with his final fall from the light as he killed Yaddle at the bidding of Lord Sidious. Each episode was separated by unknown gaps of time but focused on the recurring theme of Dooku losing faith in the Jedi’s ability to truly keep the peace and separate themselves from corruption.

RELATED:

The first short of his arc, “Justice,” opened with Qui-Gon and Dooku on a rescue mission. The son of a senator had been kidnapped, and the two set out to resolve the problem. The situation became much more complicated when the duo realized the people were desperate and that they only abducted the child as a last resort. Dooku started to sympathize with the “rebels” after seeing the conditions they live in, and when the senator immediately called for violence upon his arrival. Dooku stood with the people, stating, “We serve the people of this Republic” when the Senator argued that the Jedi exist to serve the Senate. Dooku overwhelmed the senator’s forces and ended up tapping into the dark side, almost killing the senator.

The second short of the series focused on Mace Windu and Dooku during a mission to Raxus to retrieve the body of a fallen comrade. Much like the first short, the people of the planet were unhappy with the treatment by the corrupt politician (and the Republic) and lashed out by killing a Jedi. Dooku and Mace fought through an ambush and discover that the security detail (not the rebels) were the ones responsible for their allies' death. Dooku was angered by the death of a fellow Jedi but knew there was truth to what the guard is saying. Accused of being lapdogs for the Senate, Dooku had no response and later conceded that the guards’ ideology was faulty but did have its points. This encounter, as well as Windu’s promotion to the Jedi Council for following orders without question, further pushed Dooku further from the Jedi Order.

The final short was the most emotional. It opened with an interaction between Qui-Gon and Dooku during the events of The Phantom Menace. The episode did an amazing job showing Dooku acting in shadows, but not yet succumbing to the dark side. He deleted the location of Kamino (at the request of the Sidious) but still warned his former apprentice to be careful of the Sith Lord. It then fast-forwarded to him at the Jedi Temple. It was evident that Qui-Gon’s was the final straw. Dooku left the temple to meet with Sidious but was followed by Jedi Master Yaddle. She tried to convince Dooku to return with her, but it was clear the Dark Lord’s hold is too strong. “I’m afraid it’s too late,” Dooku admitted as he ignited his blade.

"I'm afraid it's too late," Dookue told Yaddle.

Filoni’s handiwork was clear in this series: emotional dialogues, Easter eggs, and of course, another reminder of Order 66. It additionally gave fans a deeper understanding of how the Jedi's self-righteousness (not corruption) was the true cause of Dooku's loss of faith in the Republic and the Jedi Order.
