George Lucas: King Of Wooden Dialogue

"Who talks like this, George?!?" Mark Hamil commented at the beginning of the video. George Lucas was known for his "flat utilitarian" dialogues as Roger Ebert described them. As you remember all the times you cringed at the words spoken by the characters in Star Wars (especially in the prequel trilogy), ask yourself this: "If Lucas is aware of his 'wooden dialogue,' then why doesn't he fix it?"

Perhaps, Lucas was achieving a different effect with his dialogues. In viewing the words uttered by the characters as part of the vocal chorus in the overall soundtrack, he instead emphasized the feelings conveyed by the words as opposed to the actual words themselves. Listen to the clips presented in this video, and do not think of the actual words. Instead, pay attention to their tone. You would have a different understanding and maybe a little appreciation of his "wooden" dialogue style.
