WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE MANDALORIAN SEASON 3 EPISODE 7

This season of The Mandalorian has definitely been enjoyable so far. Many fans have been unhappy with the last few episodes as they felt like they were just filler and that the season wasn’t going anywhere. This episode is what the entire season has been leading to, and it definitely delivered. It is full of action with many reveals, and an emotional ending—a perfect penultimate episode of a great season.

The cold opening shows Elia Kane contacting Moff Gideon in the seedy underbelly of Coruscant. It seems the New Republic’s Amnesty Program did not work at all in reforming this imperial officer. Moff Gideon then joins various imperial officers in the so-called Shadow Council. There is a mention of Grand Admiral Thrawn and finally the live-action appearance of his second-in-command Captain Pellaeon. We already know Thrawn will be the big villain in the upcoming Ahsoka series. The name drop just makes you wonder if we will get a Thrawn reveal in the season finale as a way to set up the events of Ahsoka.

The episode then shows Bo-Katan’s Mandalorians reuniting with the Children of the Watch on Nevarro. It was cool to see the Mandalorian symbol of the Mythosaur taking up the entire bottom of the star destroyer they have acquired. The meeting between the two groups of Mandalorians starts out rocky, but both sides eventually agree to join Bo-Katan on her quest to retake Mandalore. Bo-Katan leadership skills shine in this episode, and it shows that she truly deserves to be the one to unite and lead the Mandalorians. Din and Bo-Katan also have a wonderful bonding moment when he tells her that he will follow her lead. In the meantime, IG-11 (now dubbed IG-12 by Greef Karga) has been modified to be manually controlled by Grogu. He would make good use of it to communicate with others.

The Mandalorians under Bo-Katan’s command venture back to Mandalore where they encounter more Mandalorians who never left the planet. They survived by staying on the planet's surface and evading the dangers. Bo-Katan also tells the story of how Moff Gideon acquired the Darksaber. She had surrendered to him under the promise that he would let her people go. Obviously, this did not go as planned, as he went back on his word and destroyed the entire planet.

The group ventures into the mines of Mandalore, where it turns out to be an ambush by Moff Gideon who has been secretly building a base on Mandalore. The group is separated, and the Empire captures Din. Moff Gideon tells Bo-Katan to give up the Darksaber, but she declines. She is able to cut a hole in the wall for them to escape but Paz Viszla decides to stay behind to hold off the enemy, essentially sacrificing himself.

Moff Gideon always knows how to make an entrance, and this episode was no different. He is back, and tougher than ever. He now has a full beskar armor, manpower, TIE interceptors, and TIE bombers at his disposal. His earlier request for Praetorian Guards was granted and they finally make a return in this era. Moff Gideon will be a threat going into the next episode, and probably the next season as his plan of creating the ultimate soldier comes to fruition.

This episode gave fans the illusion of safety. Things were going relatively well until they weren’t. The Mandalorians were somewhat getting along, even if they did have their differences. They all have a common goal in mind, and that is to retake their home planet of Mandalore. The Armorer seems to play a big part in joining the Mandalorians on Mandalore. However, we do not know what her intentions are, and it seems there’s more to her. Could she actually be helping Moff Gideon?

The episode ends with Bo-Katan and her Mandalorians running for their lives, Din being taken by Moff Gideon for interrogation, and Paz Vizla dying at the hands of Praetorian Guards. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out in the next episode, and if he gets rescued, especially since it has been confirmed that the show has expanded past just him. Rick Famuyiwa did a great job directing such an important episode and it is by far one of the best of the season so far. I am excited, and also nervous, to see how everything ends.
