‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Episode 5 Spoiler-Free Review

Din Djarin and another Mandalorian

Season 3 of The Mandalorian is finally leading up to something. This season has been very character-focused and we have been able to learn more about Grogu’s backstory, and find out who rescued him from the Jedi Temple. Din was able to venture to Mandalore and reclaim his status as a Mandalorian. This episode was more narrative-heavy and definitely drove the plot forward.

Greef Karga returns in this episode with a situation on Nevarro. Captain Gorian Shard’s pirates are back and have decided to attack Nevarro. Karga seeks aid from the New Republic, but only Captain Carson Teva answers the call. He is briefly accompanied by a familiar face that many Star Wars Rebels fans will recognize. Could this cameo mean we will see others Rebels characters this season, or is it hinting at a reunion in Ahsoka? Whatever it means, it was a great surprise to see in the episode.

RELATED:

Teva requests ships from the New Republic leadership but is unfortunately denied because Nevarro is not part of the New Republic (as pointed out by Elia Kane who is conveniently working at the colonel’s office). As fans know, the New Republic eventually fails, as they did not see the threat of the First Order until it was too late. Teva is concerned that this attack is not an isolated incident, and will happen again, somewhat foreshadowing what is to come.

Since the New Republic cannot help Nevarro, Teva turns to the Mandalorians instead. Enter Din and Bo-Katan. Din reasons with the Mandalorians to help out Greef Karga and brought up Karga’s offer to give them land. When Paz Vizsla speaks up after Din, you expect him to say something to the contrary. However, he agrees with Din and is able to drum up support for Din’s plan to rescue Nevarro. Fights ensue, both on land and in the air, the pirates are defeated, and Nevarro is saved. The Armorer has a chat with Bo-Katan and sends her on a mission to recruit other Mandalorians.

Captain Carson Teva returns once again at the end of the episode when he comes across a derelict New Republic ship. With the silence of space adding to the sense of foreboding, Teva and the audience discover that a certain someone has escaped with the help of an unexpected ally.

The entire season is clearly building up to something, and we can only guess what it is. There are many different possibilities after the revelations in this week’s episode. Bo-Katan is sent on a mission and we may not see her for a while. It looks like Bo-Katan will be the one to lead the Mandalorians in reclaiming their homeworld. The possible return of a certain someone is definitely on the horizon with all the pieces coming together.

This episode was a lot of fun and added to the overall story. Season 3 has been different from the previous two seasons but it is definitely crescendoing to a big climatic event. I cannot wait to see where the rest of the season takes us.

New episodes of The Mandalorian are released Wednesdays on Disney+.
