‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Episode 4 Spoiler-Free Review

Din Djarin and Grogu

This week’s episode of The Mandalorian picked up where we left off last week with Bo-Katan adapting to the Ways of Mandalore. The title “The Foundling” was appropriate as the episode chronicled a foundling’s past while the Mandalorians band together to save one of their own foundlings in the present.

As Din and Bo-Katan go on their rescue mission, Grogu stays behind with the Armorer, where the forge triggers traumatic memories. In classic Star Wars fashion, fans witness another Order 66 scene. This one is noticeably not less depressing than the other ones we’ve witnessed through the years. The door to the temple is cut, and the clone troopers come rushing in to kill the Jedi (which we caught a glimpse of in the trailer). Grogu is rushed into an elevator, where he meets a familiar Jedi (played by someone fans might recognize).

RELATED:

The Jedi speeds away with Grogu and we are treated to the lights of Coruscant once again. The exciting chase scene ends at a landing pad where a ship is waiting. More clone troopers arrive and a fight breaks out, but Grogu and the Jedi are able to make the jump to hyperspace and escape. The flashback ends and we return to the present as the Armorer finishes forging another piece of armor for Grogu.

While our question about how Grogu survived Order 66 was answered, it brought up more questions. What happened to the Jedi and how did Grogu end up where he did in the very first episode of The Mandalorian? Will we see this Jedi again especially since he was an integral part of Grogu’s life.

Then, the focus shifts to the rescue mission. A foundling is taken by a Shriek-hawk. Bo-Katan takes the lead as they stealthily make their way to the creature’s nest to avoid enraging it and thus endangering the child. Since they could not use jetpacks, they have to resort to scaling the mountain the old-fashioned way. When they reach the nest at the top, Paz Viszla rushes in to save the foundling. The creature appears and a chase ensues with both Paz Vizsla and the foundling captured. Din Djarin saves the day and they all reunite at their home.

The episode ended with Bo-Katan getting her armor repaired by the Armorer. Seeing the symbol of the Mythosaur on the wall, she asks for the Mythosaur symbol on her new pauldron instead of the Night Owl’s symbol. She reveals what she saw in the living waters of Mandalore. The Armorer, of course, does not believe her.

This episode was much more action-packed than the previous one. It also finally answered the question that has been on everyone’s mind, which is who saved Grogu during Order 66. While we did not get a lot of Din Djarin and Grogu in this episode, we were able to see more of the Way of the Mandalore as practiced by the Children of the Watch.

There have been complaints about the lack of plot so far this season. However, these so-called “filler episodes” are important as there is more character development happening. Even though the season is almost over, I have a feeling the payoff will be worth it. With only three episodes left, it will exciting to see where the rest of the season goes.

New episodes of The Mandalorian Season 3 premiere every Wednesday on Disney+.
