Invincible Mark

Mark Grayson never seems to get a break. Anytime he is about to start a new journey in life, something or someone comes needing his help. While we got more of Mark in this episode, we also got some backstory on Allen the Alien, and what his motives are. This episode has been one of the most interesting by far, with a shocking reveal at the end, that fans knew had to be coming soon.

Allen the Alien is part of the Unopian race of aliens. He was born in a Unopian breeding camp after Viltrumites wiped out his species. He has been working for the Coalition of Planets, in their battle against the Viltrum Empire. Allen tries to tell them that they may be able to fight the Viltrumites, with the help of Mark Grayson. Later, Allen is told by Thaedus that they have a spy within their ranks, who works for the Viltrumites. While investigating, Allen is taken by three Viltrimites, who try to get information out of him. He doesn’t reveal anything and instead is beaten close to death. Somehow, they were able to save him, and hopefully, he comes back to life stronger than ever.

The second part showed us Mark on his first day of college. He’s made fun of for having his Seance Dog toy and poster and also gets closer to his girlfriend. As we know, it is never an easy time for Mark, and a type of alien, known as a Thraxan, comes down to Earth to enlist Mark's help. He manages to alert his friends that he is going to be gone for a few weeks. They go to the Thraxan homeworld, where Mark is introduced to the leader. The episode ends with a shocking reveal.

We also got to see more of Debbie, Mark’s mother. She is still grieving for her husband and is now alone. She decides to call a number that Olga gave her, and it brings her to a Spouse Of Superheroes support group. It seems to be going well until she is out for drinks with one of the guys, where he reveals that his wife was in the original Guardians of the Globe and was killed by Omni Man. Debbie, feeling immense guilt, excuses herself, only to be found by the man she was just with. She reveals that her husband killed his wife, and he told her not to come back. This is truly one of the saddest arcs in the show, as she is now alone. I hope she can pick up the pieces and be happy once again as the show continues.

This episode gave us some exciting celebrity voices. The first is that of the iconic Peter Cullen, who is known for voicing Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series. He voices Thaedus, the leader of the Coalition of Planets. Peter Cullen was an amazing choice for this role, as his voice can control a room, and is exactly what Thaedus needs.  We also hear Seth Rogen as Allen, who in my opinion, was a perfect choice for this role, as he is able to embody the comedic, and serious aspect of the character. Allan is a great character, and alien, and I hope we get to see him again.  Daveed Diggs and Tatiana Maslany also lent their voices to characters in this episode.

This episode of Invincible was all over the place, but in a good way. It’s been my favorite one so far, and sets up the midseason finale that airs next week. It will be exciting to see what comes next, and if Mark gets out of it alive.

Rating: 9/10
