'Ahsoka' Premiere Review

Ahsoka Tano

The long-awaited Star Wars series, Ahsoka is finally here, and it was worth the wait. From the premiere alone, it shows how far Ahsoka has come as a character, and that she’s much different from the young Padawan we were first introduced to in The Clone Wars. She has been through a lot and is also much older, but she hasn’t lost her Ahsoka Tano charm either. There were many callbacks to Star Wars Rebels and so far, Ahsoka is feeling a bit like Rebels season 5, which isn’t a bad thing, some fans might be a bit lost however, if they have not seen the show. It also has similar vibes to the original trilogy, thanks to the sets, and the red credit scrawl at the beginning of the episode. Ahsoka truly feels like we’re watching something from the original trilogy, and it's wonderful.

The show introduces us to what we already know, that Ahsoka is looking for Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger. The presence of both of these characters is felt throughout first the two episodes. Thrawn is a threat looming in the background, with multiple people looking for him for different reasons, and Ezra is missed. Sabine even keeps a box of his things around, and there are moments we can hear him through the use of force. Ahsoka meets up with Hera Syndulla, and eventually Sabine Wren. There's some tension between the two of them, but by the end of the second episode, they seem to have made up. Everyone’s favorite war criminal droid, Chopper, is also back and is more expressive than ever. Lothal is also introduced into live action, and it's beautiful. Loth cats were also introduced, and they are cuter than ever and would be a huge hit if Disney decided to start selling plushies of them. We are introduced to Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati, a master and an apprentice who both wield orange lightsabers and are aiding Morgan Elsbeth in her quest to find Thrawn.

The music is absolutely wonderful and fits the tone well. It does a great job setting up, and amplifying a scene, something the music of Star Wars has always been good at.  Some familiar tracks are scattered throughout, that fans will recognize. The rock tracks when we meet Sabine for the first time, fit her character well, and we could use more fast-paced rock in Star Wars.

Ashley Eckstein brought Ahsoka Tano to life in The Clone Wars,  Rosario Dawson however brings a new spin to the character, while keeping the Ahsoka fans know and love at the core. While Ashley will always be the fandom's real-life Ahsoka and animated Ahsoka, Rosario is our live-action Ahsoka. Both women are essential to Ahsoka’s story, and Star Wars fans are so lucky to have both of these wonderful women portray such an iconic characters.

There was also a dedication to Ray Stevenson at the end of the episode, which was touching.

Dave Filoni does an excellent job bringing these beloved animated characters to life. You can feel the love that went into this show, not just from him, but from every actor in the show as well. Ahsoka is exciting and truly feels like Star Wars. It does not skimp on the lightsaber fights and truly gives fans what they want to see. This is by far one of my favorite Star Wars series premieres, and I am so excited to see where this journey takes us.

New episodes of Ahsoka release on Tuesdays at 6pm PST/ 9pm EST on Disney+.
