Last week it was rumored that major Xbox IPs, like Gears of War, Starfield, and more were going to go multi-platform beyond the Xbox and PCs. Because of the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard back in October, wild speculation about the future of Xbox took off online. It got so bad, that Xbox fans were bemoaning the end of the Xbox and the loss of their favorite games on Game Pass. People were so hyper-focused on anything Xbox-related that they took the removal of the logo from Game Pass advertisements as another sign of the impending doom.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, quickly took to the internet to address the rumors and announced that he, Sarah Bond (President of Xbox), and Matt Booty (Head of Xbox Game Studios), will hold an event this week to address the future of the Xbox. It is now known that this event will be a podcast, and it will be out on February 15 at 2 PM Central on the Xbox YouTube page and other podcast services.

These concerns by the fans initially started last month when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said with the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, they can now be a good publisher on Sony, Nintendo, PCs, and Xbox. Understandably, Xbox fans were concerned. It’s odd for a company that is one of the main three gaming consoles to suddenly pivot and start allowing first-party games on rival platforms. What would compel someone to still purchase an Xbox then? These concerns and the viral effect of the rumors likely compelled Spencer to try and get ahead of things and calm things down.

It’s unlikely that there will no longer be an Xbox console, and according to new reports, Phil Spencer has assured employees that Xbox has no intention to stop making consoles. There are also more markets than just the American market to consider. Things are likely to look much different than they do now, especially with the rumor of a new Xbox console by 2026, and it’s not just one, but two, with one of them supposedly being a handheld.

Regardless, the gaming world is anxiously awaiting the information Spencer, Bond, and Booty are going to deliver this Thursday. Whatever it is, it’s likely to shake up the video game industry.
