Wookiees May Be Appearing In 'The Mandalorian' Season 3
Despite season 2 ending only a short while ago, it is abundantly clear that The Mandalorian is an absolute hit and fans are more than happy to have it included as part of the ever growing Star Wars universe. It would seem that Disney has also taken note of this and heard the fans' joy, based on the numerous TV shows it now has in the pipeline to further expand said universe.
Whilst it is set within the Skywalker saga timeline (specifically between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens), the show has received praise for focusing on original characters, with a few ''special guests'' thrown in from various forms of media, not just the movies.
The first two seasons saw us following the adventures of Din Djarin and his little, green friend, Baby Yoda (I mean Grogu) after rescuing him and trying to keep the last remnants of the Empire from hunting him down. But it would seem we are in for a totally different ride in season 3, based on the pair going their separate ways at the end of season 2. The finale saw none other than Luke Skywalker himself show up and take Grogu away to be trained as a Jedi.
As it stands at the moment, plot details of season 3 are being kept under wraps. However, recent rumors have suggested that the show will directly tie in to the events of The Book of Boba Fett, another upcoming TV series for Disney+, with Temuera Morrison reprising his role as Boba Fett from season 2 of The Mandalorian. This new show could potentially see such familiar characters such as Din Djarin, Migs Mayfield, and Cobb Vanth return, suggesting that Disney and Lucasfilm are looking closer and closer at an overall shared universe, eventually allowing characters from each show to turn up in the other at various points.
As fans always do, they will continue to keep guessing at the endless possible cameos. However, a new rumor suggests that we are going to be seeing an old fan favorite species appear in next season: Wookiees.
The Wookiees have been a prominent part of the Star Wars mythology since the original film. It wasn't until Revenge of the Sith we got to learn a bit more about them onscreen when we saw Grand Master Yoda aid them with the battle on their homeworld Kashyyk. (We are not counting the Star Wars Holiday Special at all.)
Of course, it goes without saying that the most famous Wookie of them all is everyone's favorite walking carpet himself, Chewbacca. Appearing in the original film as co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon with Han Solo, played by the late Peter Mayhew. Chewbacca would star in seven out of nine saga films, as well as Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Now, the Bespin Bulletin Instagram page has shared a report stating that ''a Wookiee or Wookiees'' will appear in season 3 of The Mandalorian. They have since stated that they are unclear as to whether or not it will be in the form of a character we already know, a new one, or it just random background character(s).
From a purely narrative point of view, it would make sense for them to appear in a well established show such as this, as it would allow us to see just how they have faired since the end of the Galactic War in Return of the Jedi. Especially when you consider how much they and their planet featured in expanded media as being heavily under the influence of the Empire. (Anyone else remember the game The Force Unleashed?)
Following the release of this news, fans have obviously begun speculating about Chewie showing up in some capacity, as he would be the most obvious choice. However, the difficulty with it is going to be in details. It has to make narrative sense, like when Luke showed up, logically, it did fit. If they look to just throw him in the mix for the sake of it, this could lead to some issues and potential plot holes later down the line.
Whilst it would be great to see Chewie again, the twist of Luke Skywalker and now Wookiees/Chewbacca potentially showing up, could mean that The Mandalorian is in danger of falling into the trap of trying to fit itself into the already existing storyline, instead of gently flowing along next to it. Established characters will no doubt always be welcome, but not at the expense of a coherent story.
No release date has been given for The Mandalorian season 3 as of yet. However, seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on Disney+.
As always, we will keep you updated with any new information as and when it comes out.
Until next time!
