Wizards Of The Coast Now Says That It Is Not Selling 'D&D' To Tencent As Rumors Suggest
Well, as is the nature with such things, it looks like the internet strikes again. Last week, it was reported by East Asian news site, Speed Daily, that Hasbro, and vicariously Wizards of the Coast, were looking to sell off the IP for Dungeons & Dragons to the behemoth investment group Tencent.
That, as it turns out, is apparently not the case.
“We don’t make a habit of commenting on internet rumors,” Wizards of the Coast themselves commented, “but to be clear: we are not looking to sell our D&D IP. We will keep talking to partners about how we bring the best digital experiences to our fans.” There it is. Straight from the source. D&D isn’t going anywhere?

So what happened? Hard to say, but it likely stems from the latest report from Hasbro that their revenue was down approximately 13-15%. Couple that with the large layoffs that have plagued the company, and much of the gaming industry, the last few months, massively unpopular licensing rule changes, and a change in publishing houses. Changes on this scale are almost always a cause for concern, but with the response from Wizards of the Coast themselves, and, as PC Gamer states, D&D is technically successful financially for Hasbro, it’s becoming clear that this was the result of wild internet speculation.
The realm of possibility was there, however. Tencent has been a growing presence in the gaming industry, buying up shares and controlling portions of gaming developers and publishers over the last decade. For example, they have a 30% stake in Larian Studios, which recently published the highly successful Baldur’s Gate 3.
PC Gamer speculates this could just be Tencent looking to pump more money into D&D games, given BG3’s success.
