Welcome Kahhori, Mohawk Superhero From Next 'What If...?' That Imagines Vibranium Landing In Pre-Colonial America

Back in 2021, Marvel Studios released What If…?, an animated series meant to push the boundaries of creativity within the MCU by expanding the concept of nexus events introduced in Loki through the reimagination of well-known events from the movies.

With What…If? season 2, Marvel Studios is going to explore the multiverse even further by introducing new heroes and villains, still through the lens of Jeffrey Wright’s The Watcher. Notably, one of the episodes will introduce Kohhari and will ask: what if the Tesseract had fallen to Earth and landed in the sovereign Haudenosaunee Confederacy before the colonization of America?

Written by Ryan Little, the episode will follow Kohhari’s foray into the multiverse as she crosses the gateway that was created by the Tesseract when it fell in what is now upstate New York, the Akwesasne region.

Little is particularly excited for the viewers to watch this unique story unfold: “It tells a remarkable story from a Native-Mohawk perspective which is truly unique and historical, and will give the viewers a new, challenging and entertaining perspective on this land's first peoples. The story is dramatic, the characters fully realized, and the action sequences are breath-taking.” Adding, “The episode is exceptional in another sense--it is done with the complete cooperation of the Mohawk people from dialogue to adornment.”

To guarantee cultural authenticity within the story, Little collaborated with historian Doug Georges and Mohawk language expert Cecelia King who are indigenous community experts. Additionally, director Bryan Andrews, executive producer A.C. Bradley, story editor Matthew Chauncey, and the rest of the production team collaborated closely with the Mohawk Nation to create a coherent environment and Kohhari’s design. Interestingly, the whole episode will take place in the Mohawk language and will include traditional Mohawk music.

To celebrate the creation of this brand-new superhero, FUNKO is releasing a Funko Vinyl Soda that glows in the dark, simulating Kohhari’s new cosmic powers. The collectible is set to be on sale exclusively at Walmart retailers on March 29.

Although What…If? season 2 was slated for an early 2023 release, Marvel Studios has yet to confirm a release date for the series.
