What Would A ‘Star Wars’ Droid Focused Movie Look Like?
It is a great time to follow Star Wars. The legendary Obi-Wan Kenobi will soon return to the screen along with Darth Vader and possibly Darth Sidious. Fan favorites like Ahsoka Tano, Cassian Andor, and Grogu will arrive in a galaxy near you, too in new Star Wars TV shows.
These high-profile projects have overshadowed Star Wars: A Droid Story. LucasFilm announced the animated project in 2020. The story follows R2-D2, C-3PO, and a new character on a special mission. No other details are yet available.

No other characters show up in every Star Wars film except Solo: A Star Wars Story. As such, the pair serves as a memory bank.
Iconic scenes could return with a twist. Imagine R2-D2 sharing his version of saving his pals from the Death Star trash compactor. Picture C-3PO recalling the countless times he has been destroyed and rebuilt.
New material could intersect with familiar territory in an unexpected way. R2-D2 could join a never before seen battle from the Clone Wars or Resistance era. C-3PO might ride with a famous pilot in the cockpit of a starship during a dogfight. The possibilities are endless depending on the timeline of the film.

Although Star Wars can veer into dark territory, it remains an adventure series at heart. The best Star Wars stories offer laughs, thrills, and something for young viewers. Droids deliver on all three areas. Sometimes, the humor comes from physical spectacle. Astromech droid BB-8 brings much-needed comic relief by rolling around and spewing coins. Separatist battle droids make for great cannon fodder as they fall apart and say, "Roger, roger!"
Beyond slapstick moments, droids provide fantastic one-liners. One of the best moments in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes when the protagonist, Jynn Erso, almost shoots K-2SO. Horrified that he was nearly mistaken for a similar looking Imperial security droid, K-2SO exclaims, "Did you know that wasn't me?"
Amazing quotes need not only come from heroic droids. Assassin droid HK-47 refers to his organic foes as "meatbags" in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. When asked to define love, HK-47 responds, "Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope. Love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticule, and together, achieving a singular purpose against statistically long odds.” Star Wars could use more comical baddies like HK-47.
Nothing tops the class dynamic between R2-D2- and C-3PO. RD-D2’s spunkiness combined with C-3PO’s paranoia makes for comedy gold. With a whole movie and new droids to interact with, this duo could bring the funniest Star Wars movie to date.

Star Wars devotes most of its screen time to these larger-than-life action stars. When the charismatic Han Solo or badass Din Djarin show up, they grab an audience’s attention. Yet badass fighters do not make up the entire Star Wars universe. It could be time for these figures to share the spotlight.
Droids unlock secret doors, hack computers, and repair cruisers. Their value comes from problem solving, communication, and information analysis. Not everyone needs to resolve conflict with lightsabers or blasters. Some Star Wars adventures could do without galaxy-spanning stakes. Taking a look at daily life on a new planet with a small scale challenge could be a refreshing change of pace.
A Lesson in Droid Behavior
The theatrical Stars Wars releases track the journey of the famous Skywalker family. However, the series does not start immediately with Luke or Leia. Instead, it focuses on the strange journey of R2-D2 and C-3PO bickering in the desert of Tatooine.
C-3PO says, “Sometimes, I just don’t understand human behavior.” Perhaps it is time for humans to understand droid behavior. After all, droids might save the day one more time.
