Daisy Ridley Provides Cryptic Response To A Future Rey Appearance

Star Wars fans always try to be supportive of the world that was built over forty years ago by George Lucas. However, as more projects were released, they slowly started to form camps. There were “team original trilogy,” “team prequel trilogy,” and in the last five years, “team sequel trilogy.” Whatever team you find yourself sitting in or even if you do not have a team, the actors from these movies will forever be tied to the franchise whether they like it or not. In a couple of weeks, we will see the premiere of Obi-Wan Kenobi and the titular character played by Ewan Macgregor is making a return to the franchise even though it was previously believed that it would not be possible. Another actress from Star Wars who some would say was an important part of what became the Skywalker Saga, Daisy Ridley, recently gave a baller response when asked if she would reprise her role as Rey Skywalker.

At the recent red carpet during the 2022 BAFTA awards, which honor films and television series from the United Kingdom, the interviewer asked Daisy whether she missed being Rey. After sparing the camera a brief glance, she responded:

“I’ll always be Rey.”

She then chuckled and followed with, “Soundbite.”

This has Star Wars fans raising a bit of an eyebrow at her declaration as this soundbite is shared all over the internet. When we last saw Rey, she was putting the last pieces of the Skywalker legacy to rest by burying the lightsabers of both Luke and Leia in the sands of Tatooine. Over the last couple of years, everyone has been wondering where the movies will be going next. As Rey is one of the last officially sanctioned Jedi, future movies could follow her training a new batch of Jedi and Force users. Perhaps she could face a new enemy left by the power vacuum after eliminating Palpatine and what we believe was the Sith. After all, we know nothing is ever really “dead” when it comes to the Force and Star Wars.

There is plenty of speculation out there on what the next big-screen projects will be. Nothing really seems to be looking at carrying on the Skywalker Saga. The focus seems to be on offshoots like Patty Jenkins’ on again, off again Rogue Squadron film and whatever sci-fi/comedy mash-up Taika Waititi will be bringing. The news from Daisy herself that she met with Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy coupled with this cheeky comment could mean something. For right now, most of the Star Wars universe appears to be locked into the series life on Disney+ with properties like The Mandalorian Season 3, Andor, and the aforementioned Obi-Wan Kenobi. It is tough to pin down where we go from here. The actors from the sequel trilogy have certainly expressed the fact they want to come back into the fold. Even Jon Boyega has commented that he would return back if asked.

At the end of the day, is this something we really want to see? It was great to see the new faces and new characters that were introduced in the sequel trilogy and I will defend the sequel trilogy without any question. On the other hand, what keeps Star Wars fresh is when they keep the main movies at arm's length from spin-offs like The Mandalorian or Solo. While it would be nice to see Rey get a little more boost with her own movie, perhaps we should heed Kylo Ren’s words in The Last Jedi, “Let the past die. Kill it, if you have to. That’s the only way to become what you were meant to be.” We certainly need to take Star Wars to new places in order to become what we want it to be.
