Recently, a new film in The Lord Of The Rings franchise was announced, called The Hunt For Gollum. Peter Jackson will not be directing, but will instead be a producer. Andy Serkis will direct and reprise his role as Gollum in the film. This new film will bring in a whole new cast to tell this story, however, there is one actor from the original films who would be interested in reprising his role as a certain ranger.

Recently, during an interview with GQ, Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen revealed that he is interested in returning to play Aragorn in the upcoming film. He does specify that “the story would have to do right by the character, and crucially take his age into account”. He says he has not been asked yet, and stresses that he would only do it if it were done right by the character, otherwise it would be silly for him to return.

The biggest problem facing Mortensen’s return is his age. It’s been over 20 years since the last The Lord Of The Rings film. When he was originally filmed, he was in his early to mid-forties, but now he’s in his sixties. While no plot details have been released regarding the film, the story seems to come from the appendices within The Lord Of The Rings book.

During The Fellowship Of The Ring, shortly after Frodo gains possession of the ring, Gandalf heads out to find information regarding the ring. There’s about a 20-year gap here, not seen in the movies, which also includes Gandalf and Aragorn going to hunt Gollum, to prevent him from revealing the hobbits to Saruon. This would put Aragorn at the same age he was during the first film, which might be hard for Mortensen to return.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Aragorn, and if someone else does, they have massive shoes to fill. It’s too early for any casting information yet, but at least, we know that Viggo Mortensen is interested in returning as Aragorn.
