While Star Wars fans are usually happy to argue over almost every detail in the franchise, nearly every fan will agree that one of the most, if not the most, iconic Darth Vader moments was the short scene at the end of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Ever since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story came out on December 16th of 2016 people have been raving about how truly amazing Darth Vader is at the end of this film. Ever since then there have been countless fan reaction videos popping up all over the internet but one you may not have heard of is Peter Jackson’s hilarious reaction to this iconic Darth Vader scene.

Peter Jackson was one of the lucky few who were able to witness this scene play out in person. In a Twitter post, Gary Whitta, a co-developer for the story of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, had this to say:

“I still remember vividly Gareth excitedly showing me the first cut of this, no music or VFX, wires still visible, but even in that nascent form it was clear that it was going to straight-up murder audiences. As I recall Peter Jackson was on set that day also losing his [expletive]."

Although it was only a rough cut of the scene itself, Gary Whitta also had an amazing experience with this Darth Vader scene alongside director Gareth Edwards. They go on to say that Peter Jackson happened to be in the area when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was being filmed and extended an invitation for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit director to witness the making of the Darth Vader scene in person. Like anyone even remotely a fan of Stars Wars would do, Peter Jackson jumped at the idea. Gareth Edwards went on to say in an interview with Empire:

"He walked in literally for that shot where it goes from darkness to the lightsaber turning on. Whatever I do in my career, whatever happens next, it's gonna be hard to top the honor of getting to direct that scene."

The scene itself is truly a masterpiece and one that Darth Vader fans have been wanting for years now. The scene perfectly portrays Darth Vader’s ruthlessness and power as he cuts through the Rebel forces. The only time fans have been able to see Darth Vader’s true power was either in comics or by getting a mere taste of his power in shows such as the animated Star Wars series Rebels. So, seeing this live-action scene in person must have been a dream come true. In an interview on December 16, 2021, on the film’s five-year anniversary, Edwards remarked:

"Obviously, it’s a dream come true, it seems too good to be true, like I’m playing the game version where I get to make a Star Wars film. It’s not the sort of thing that should happen to you in your career, like even the best version of where your career could go. I feel very lucky and I consider it very sacred territory."

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was truly a masterful film that earned a score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and is still seen as one of the best newer Star Wars films today. Knowing that the people behind it put in as much thought, effort, and love that fans have for the franchise just makes the film that much more special. And knowing that a renowned film director such as Peter Jackson had a fanboy moment makes it even better.
