Universal And Illumination Looking To Ink A Deal For A 'Legend Of Zelda' Movie
The Legend of Zelda fans may have something else to look forward to following the release of Tears of the Kingdom earlier this year. A movie adaptation for the IP may be in the works at Universal and Illumination! On THE HOT MIC podcast, Jeff Sneider and John Rocha brought this up. Sneider in particular said that he had a “great source” give him the tip about the Nintendo corporation and Universal coming close to “closing a big deal.”
Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which has surpassed a box office revenue of $1 billion, tackling another massive IP is a logical move for both sides. Video game movies and television series as a whole have been doing well over the last few years; since Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), fans have been more keen for these adaptations, as there is tangible proof they can be done right and that studios will listen to fans. Sneider also mentioned in the episode that “Nintendo…knows its worth,” so negotiations will be steep and lengthy.

As the company and studio involved are Universal and Illumination, the film will be animated. Whether it will be a direct adaptation of a game plot like the manga adaptations for Zelda has yet to be seen, since the deal is in still the initial talking phases. From character voices to design to plot, the possibilities are wide open for the future! More concrete details will come as the supposed deal progresses.
