SAG-AFTRA’s counterpart across the pond, Equity, the actor’s union in the United Kingdom is standing in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA with a protest held last Friday. Per Equity, the plan was to hold a “colourful display of banners, flags, and signs for people to hold, and [to hear] from speakers from the entertainment industry and trade union movement.” The rally began at Leicester Square in London. Protestors marched from there to Media City in Manchester. The union has stated for the record that they “stand in unwavering solidarity” with SAG-AFTRA from the onset of the ongoing American strike.

Equity General Secretary Paul W. Fleming, Equity President Lydia Rooke, and John McDonnell are among the known attendees. McDonnell is the former Shadow Chancellor for the opposition Labour Party. At this time the UK anti-trade union laws regarding actors working during the strike is that “SAG-AFTRA members currently working under an Equity UK collective bargaining agreement should continue to report to work.” Equity has released guidance about specific projects. Currently American shows filming in the UK that are comprised of mostly international cast members fall under Equity collective bargaining agreements. This means that these projects will continue filming at this time. This includes the HBO hit, House of the Dragon.
