Ubisoft Reveals That 'Star Wars Outlaws' Could Be The Scoundrel Sim Fans Have Been Wanting

Back in 2012, LucasArts revealed their plans for Star Wars: 1313, a video game that would have taken place in the seedy underbelly of Coruscant, letting players take on the role of Boba Fett. The game was abandoned after the Disney acquisition, and all Star Wars games released since then were mainly focused on the Jedi vs. Sith or the Rebellion vs. the Empire battles.

But if all goes well 2024 will see the release of a new open-world game that might revive the 1313 spirit: Star Wars Outlaws.

Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games, the story will take place in the year between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, when the Rebel Alliance is focused on running from the Empire and consolidating their forces after the Battle of Hoth.

The playable character is a human female called Kay Vess, who has no interest in joining the battles that shape the galaxy but wants to survive in the criminal underworld that exists in the vacuum between the Empire and the Rebellion.

“This is a character who is just trying to get by—stealing, outwitting, and conning folks,” said Narrative Director Navid Khavari. “I would love for folks playing the game to really get a sense of what it might feel like to step into the underworld.”

On her various bigger and smaller quests and missions, Kay is accompanied by Merqaal called Nix, a rather cute-looking four-legged alien, and a former commando droid named ND-5, who, for some reason, wears a trench coat.

The game will feature familiar characters, organizations, and planets like Jabba, the Pyke Syndicate, and Tatooine, as well as stormtroopers and (corrupt) Imperial Officers, and much of Kay's fate will depend upon how well she will be able to balance the vastly different interest of these groups.

“Players can use quests with each of the syndicates to manage Kay’s reputation, which will impact the jobs they offer and the impact they’ll have on throughout the story. Each player will have a different profile with each of the syndicates based on how they’ve interacted with them over the course of her journey.”, explains Khavari.

The gameplay itself will focus on three levels: walking around, running, and sneaking in places like garages, cantinas, or hangar bays, riding vehicles like speeder bikes to outrun other scoundrels, and finally venturing out into space and visiting other planets on Kay's spaceship, The Trailblazer.

“We want to allow fans to indulge in some intergalactic tourism. But we’re also really excited for them to experience new characters and planets in this iconic era as well,” Khavari said.

All this and the gameplay trailer that Massice released a few months ago sounds very promising. Still, Star Wars gamers have become cautious over the years, as too many games have been announced and later canceled, not just 1313 but also the Revan remake or the Jade Raymond and Amy Hennig-helmed Project Ragtag, which was set to be an Uncharted meets Star Wars game.

But right now, Star Wars Outlaws is still on track to be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC sometime in 2024.
