Tony Gilroy, Showrunner For 'Star Wars: Andor,' Says That He Avoided Fan Service To Tell A Great Story
Discourse on the quality of Star Wars films has picked up lately, especially concerning its propensity to refuse to move beyond the established events and characters. Questions were raised if something is really Star Wars if it exists outside of that, and the other side of the issue is accusations of fan service.
“We didn’t want to do anything that was fan service,” Tony Gilroy told IGN in an interview. This will not be the first time fans have seen Cassian Andor, Mon Mothma, or even Saw Gerrera. But the words from early reviews are that Andor is dark, visceral, and by some accounts, the grittiest Star Wars story yet. Gilroy described the project as “a fresh canvas.”

Cameos, callbacks, and fan service have been inescapable in recent Star Wars productions. It seems like Andor will take the old and tell a great story with it. The oppression of the Empire has been hinted at and shown before in glimpses. With the reaction to the first three episodes being so positive, and Gilroy telling IGN “Let’s go down on the street” in reference to zooming in on the everyday people, Andor has the opportunity to tell a truly compelling Star Wars story. As the tagline says, it’s the “story of how a revolution starts.”
Andor premieres with the first three episodes streaming on Wednesday on Disney+.
