'Tomb Raider' Getting The TTRPG Treatment
Fans of the Tomb Raider franchise are excited to learn that a tabletop role-playing game is not only on the books but has been in production for over a year with an expectation to release in 2025. The game will be titled Tomb Raider: Shadows of Truth. John Stafford, narrative director at Crystal Dynamics, partnered with Apocalypse Keys author Rae Nedjadi and Evil Hats developer Fred Hicks on the project. The game will come to fruition by blending the Powered by The Apocalypse and Forged in the Dark RPG systems.
Fred Hicks sat down with Polygon and discussed the importance of character in narrative design. “Meeting with them [Crystal Dynamics], I got a sense that they understood the franchise well, they understood how we approach storytelling, character-based storytelling. “We love characters to have beginning, middles, and ends, and choices they make, and they’re mirroring that in the design. That was appealing to us, that it really marries well with how we like to tell stories.” Players will be faced with questions concerning their characters throughout the game. The character's choices will determine their fate in this version of the Tomb Raider universe.
Nedjadi commented, “Lara has been several different people across the franchise.” [But] Tomb Raider (2013), that was the first time I felt like, in an action-adventure game, [that] they were trying to say [something about] what would drive a person to survive and use violence in order to keep moving forward. What does that look like? It felt like they were getting better at it each and every game in that series.” Because of this sensibility, the heart of the game centers on player’s moves being consistent with the character in which they are playing, including their hopes, dreams, belief systems, motivations, etc.
