'Thor: Love And Thunder' Is A Family Movie In A Very Different Way
The MCU’s favorite demigod thundered back into the box office this past weekend, grossing $143 million over the course of the opening. The film fits right in with the vibe of recent Thor and Guardians movies, filled with Taika Waititi’s signature jokes and comedic scenarios. More than the others, however, Thor: Love and Thunder can be considered a “family” movie, and this has nothing to do with its MCU-standard PG-13 rating.
The film features some very special cameos. In an interview, Chris Hemsworth shared that all three of his children, Christian Bale’s children, Natalie Portman’s children, and one of Taika Waititi’s daughters are all part of the film. Spoilers ahead!

Hemsworth’s daughter, India Rose, plays the daughter of Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who is known as “Love” at the end of the film. Bale had only great things to say about working with the young actress, praising both her talents and Hemsworth’s relationship with her. Hemsworth’s son Tristan plays a younger Thor in a flashback sequence at the beginning of the movie, and his other daughter Sascha plays one of the Asgardian children kidnapped by Gorr. Even Hemsworth’s wife, Elsa Pataky, made an appearance as a previous love interest of Thor.
Hemsworth was not alone in this “family affair.” He confirmed in the same interview that Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Taika Waititi also had their children appear in the film, though they weren’t credited specifically. Waititi expressed that it wasn’t always the plan, but as they all looked around and saw that so many of them had kids, they realized what a wonderful experience it would be to share a scene with them.
Thor: Love and Thunder appear to adapt the wholesome pop culture trend of an unlikely father figure finding themselves inseparable from an adopted child, joining The Mandalorian, The Witcher, and Stranger Things in this respect. It will be exciting to see where the duo fits in as we progress through Phase 4 of the MCU.
