It has been a point of speculation for some time that James Gunn would not only be writing Superman Legacy. Today, James Gunn took to Twitter to confirm what Tom King let slip: Gunn will both write and direct the project. Along with this, he shared that the film’s release date holds a special connection to his father.

In the thread, James Gunn revealed audiences can expect Superman Legacy to premiere in theaters on July 11th, 2025. Gunn added that when his brother saw the release date “he began to cry.” Gunn was confused until his brother told him, “Dude, it’s dad’s birthday.” At the moment, Gunn “hadn’t realized.”

He went on to describe his father’s impact on his life. He spoke about how his father always encouraged his love of film and comic books, and that he “wouldn’t be making this movie now without him.” Gunn continued by talking about the “long road” that led him here. Revealing that he had been offered a chance at making a Superman film in the past, but that he didn’t feel he had anything new or unique that he could bring to the character. He claimed that it wasn’t until “a bit less than a year ago” an idea finally formed on how he’d approach telling Superman’s story.

In the past, the reason he had only announced that he would be writing was that he felt “hesitant to direct.” Citing that: “Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude.”

Gunn was the writer and director for The Suicide Squad and multiple episodes of Peacemaker for the DCEU, but Superman Legacy will act as the first live-action film in the new DCU. Just as Snyder did with Man of Steel, this film will set the tone for the future of DC films. The pressure is surely mounting for Gunn, but the excitement is only building for fans.
