Third 'Kick-Ass' Movie On The Way, Script In The Works
Fans of the original two installments of the Kick-Ass films, R-rated superhero films that subverted many of the tropes of “traditional” superhero movies popularized by Marvel and DC, should be pleased to learn that Matthew Vaughn, who directed the first film, has stated that a third installment is in the works. However, how the new film would fit in with the previous two films seems confusing stemming from comments that Vaughn has made about the project. The confusion seems to be about whether this third Kick-Ass film will be a continuation of the original two films, making them a trilogy, or if it will be a reboot, or more interestingly, the third part of a different trilogy of films to bear the title of the original films. According to Vaughn:
“We’re halfway through it. There’s a very, very dare I say it... and it’s gonna be a cliche coming out of this head of mine. It is a very, very meta-universe. It is what, you know, ‘Kick-Ass' was reinventing and creating a R-rated superhero and no one was really doing it. This is taking that whole concept to a worthy…not even a sequel, because I think it’s just a whole new way of doing ‘Kick-Ass,' which couldn’t be more ‘Kick-Ass.’”

Vaughn, who has been working on the film for some time, reports that the script for a new Kick-Ass film is far along. Giving some credence to the idea of Kick-Ass 3 being part of a new trilogy, of which the latest Kick-Ass would be a part, Vaughn stated that the first film of a potential trilogy would be School Fight, a second film, which he nicknamed Vram, and then Kick-Ass 3, which may include some of the original characters from the first two films. Asked if all the films would be completed before being released, Vaughn stated that that was not his intention and that he expects School Fight, which is already shot and done, to premiere this year or next year and that Vram is currently filming.
"No. So, when this (VRAM) is finished, I think this will launch, I'll be conservative on this, if we're lucky, Toronto, if we're not lucky, Sundance. Well, this year, next year, if you know what I mean."
Given the mysterious and possibly unique nature of Vaughn’s Kick-Ass 3, it will be interesting to see how a potential third film in the series will be manifested.
