Believe it or not, this was still a thing! Netflix, which most people simply know as a streaming service is moving on from its roots and into the future.

Netflix started in 1997 with Marc Randolph sending a disc in the mail to his friend Reed Hasting. The intention was to ensure that doing the same with the then-new invention of DVDs would be possible without damaging them. After a successful test, the two of them launched Netflix a year later, a company that started as a DVD rental delivery, despite knowing that these discs would be overtaken by technology that would be more convenient for the consumer.

Current CEO Ted Sarantos said recently "Those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home — and they paved the way for the shift to streaming... We feel so privileged to have been able to share movie nights with our DVD members for so long, so proud of what our employees achieved, and excited to continue pleasing entertainment fans for many more decades to come. " The final day discs will be shipped will be September 29th. It is estimated that 1.1-1.3 million people were still subscribed to the DVD mailing service, compared to the 231 million streaming customers.

Sarandos stated, "To everyone who ever added a DVD to their queue or waited by the mailbox for a red envelope to arrive: thank you."
