There May Be Plans For More 'Evangelion'
Three years ago, Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time brought the long-running Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise to a close, with the film being the fourth and final installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion series, bringing both that series as well as the original 1995 anime to a conclusion. For a time it seemed that this film would be the last we’d see of Shinji and Evangelion Unit 01, but new details have emerged suggesting that perhaps it was not the end.
In a recent interview between Asahi Shimbun newspaper and Hideaki Anno, the creator and director of the Evangelion series, Anno mentioned “there may be plans” for more installments of the franchise in the works at Studio Khara. While this could be a great sign for fans of the series, Anno has also acknowledged that future projects would likely have “someone other than himself” at the helm, which makes sense considering how Thrice Upon a Time was the definitive ending of the story and was meant, and still is Anno’s last installment in the franchise.

While there are no concrete plans for Evangelion continuations or spinoffs, this won’t stop fans from speculating as to what kind of stories can be told with these characters. For example, there could be a series or movie covering the 14-year time skip that occurred between the second and third Rebuilds, something that we only got a slight glimpse into with the short film Evangelion 3.0 (-46h). Of course, Evangelion is no stranger to alternate timelines and bizarre storylines, meaning we could also see adaptations of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto’s Evangelion manga, or Ikuto Yamashita’s Evangelion Anima light novel series, or even an adaptation of the Girlfriend of Steel videogames.
In the meantime, Neon Genesis Evangelion and The End of Evangelion are available on Netflix, while the Rebuild of Evangelion movies are streaming on Prime Video.
