The Sonic franchise seems to be doing very well for itself. This speedy blue hedgehog has two very successful movies, a Netflix series on the horizon, and a very anticipated new mainline game, Sonic Frontiers. However, this recent news really puts that success into perspective. The Sonic Franchise has surpassed 1.5 billion unit sales and downloads as of the fiscal year 2022.

This number is an around 130 million unit increase from the previous year and is a continuation of the trend seen in 2018, where the sales and downloads have been increasing at a steady rate. Furthermore, Sonic seems to already be speeding into new frontiers with a reported 1.4 million unit sales as of Q1 2023. Things are certainly looking up for the blue blur. The success of the franchise can be attributed to a variety of factors, such as the success of 2017’s Sonic Mania, the continued success of the mobile game Sonic Forces Speed Battle, and the impact of the recent Sonic movies. Whatever the case may be, Sonic is not in as dire of a state as some may fear, and with the impending release of Sonic Frontiers and the upcoming Sonic Prime, it certainly seems like the franchise will be seeing much more success real soon.
