Many of you may be familiar with the character Saw Gerrera.  He was a legendary Rebel, and even more legendary after he departs from the recognized Rebellion.  The man was radical in his attacks on the Empire, and ultimately his legacy will live on for it.  Lately, with the new Star Wars content, the character has been brought up a little more.  If you’ve seen Rogue One, you know the character will come to importance in Andor as well.

A recent interview with genius director and mastermind of Andor, Tony Gilroy, delved a bit into how Gerrera may come to importance in the second season.  We know the show is quite the gritty one, full of political unrest, oppression, and a need for action in a choking galaxy.  Gilroy had quite a bit to say, nothing quite direct but all very informative.

Gilroy comments on how “this revolution is hundreds of different groups and people and rebellions all over the place that are nascent and cooking,” the Rebel cells are expansive and separate.  They don’t know each other, at least not directly.  It’s hard to coordinate so many people, even if they’re fighting for the same thing overall.

This show is an origin of origins, according to Gilroy we’re “watching Luthen try to pull it together, and Saw [Gerrera] is one of the people he deals with; there are other people he deals with.”  The radical Rebel is involved among others, the story is the crafting of a revolution rather than a focus on just a few characters.

Gerrera is still very important.  At this point in the timeline, he is no longer directly affiliated with the current budding Rebellion.  Despite his extremist views and actions, he is still needed.  Gilroy captures the character perfectly with this statement:

“Saw is very much, that’s the first place you look and go, ‘Oh God, they should have had more.’ That’s a great character because he never gets in the tent. He doesn’t fit in the big tent. He’s too crazy.”

Andor had a raging premier, hooking any fans who came in uneasy. The anticipation for what’s to come will drive anyone wild; I know I’m itching for the next episode already. This season will have 12 episodes in total, with a finale set for November 23rd.
