James Earl Jones Steps Down As The Voice Of Darth Vader
Well, it was an inevitability, especially with the amount of Star Wars productions coming up, but it still hurts when it comes. James Earl Jones, the iconic voice of Darth Vader, who gave the Sith Lord his gravitas and threatening auras, has stepped down from the role.
With the legendary actor being 92 years old, it is only a matter of time before he slows down his workload. In the last five years, his only new film role was 2018’s Warning Shot. His last television role in the same capacity was the short-lived 2015 TNT drama Agent X. This is the first official indication that he will not be making an exception and briefly come out of retirement for any particular role anymore.

It seems to have started with this year’s Obi-Wan Kenobi where Darth Vader’s voice was created through the Respeecher technology. Respeecher is an AI program that creates new dialogues with the voices of dead or aged-out actors when they cannot recapture the exact tones from the original performances. Jones signed off on and further advised the production team on the use of the Respeecher to create Darth Vader’s infamous voice. His last actual performance as Vader was back in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
It remains to be seen how Jones’ retirement will affect future Star Wars productions and how far they will push beyond the Skywalker Saga as a result.
