The Shortlist For The 95th Academy Awards Has Been Revealed
Shortlists for ten categories have just been announced for the Academy Awards in March 2023. Marvel (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and DC (The Batman) are going head-to-head for three Oscars, with Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick also picking up nominations.
This year’s documentary categories are highly competitive, but it is still surprising to many that the Oprah-produced documentary Sidney is absent. It appears a famous name is no guarantee of success with this prestigious club as Robert Downey Jr’s Netflix biopic about his relationship with his father failed to make the cut. Taylor Swift’s popular short All Too Well also missed the mark. However, there’s no need for the Swifties to riot just yet, as Taylor has been nominated for Best Original Song for Carolina in Where The Crawdads Sing.

Avatar: The Way of Water is considered the one to beat for the visual effects award, but don’t discount All Quiet On The Western Front just yet. Brendan Fraser’s comeback movie The Whale has been given a nod in the Hair and Makeup category, and it’s expected that he may make the Best Actor list to be released at the end of January. Also, watch out for The Quiet Girl, making history as the first-ever Irish Language film on an Oscar’s shortlist, appearing in the International Feature Film category.
