The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has returned for a second season, regripping fans in the tumultuous history of the Second Age of Middle-earth. This season picks up where the first left off. As the official synopsis touts, it “plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness.” In an interview with Nerdist, actress and series regular Markella Kavenagh spoke about the season and how her character reacts to events.

Kavenagh’s character is a generally positive Harfoot faced with a fair bit of negative content. The character is friends with an Istar, which may set up some expectations.  Regarding this, the actress explained, “The pressure I feel is to betray Nori’s truth… I don’t really think it’s helpful to think too much about the kind of Wizard/Harfoot dynamic. Just because it’s so specific to our story and to The Rings of Power. It exists in its own kind of narrative.” Nori knows the identity of the Stranger, and the actress confirms that her character is “more prepared for it now.” Nori has had time to think about it, the actress explained, “It’s more trying to understand where it comes from and how she can also help him navigate it.”

The actress commented on the character’s personality in particular, “I would definitely say she’s still playful and has that really joyful energy. And, hopefully, a lot of heart. The things that she’s been through towards the end of season one have definitely impacted her in season two.”  Kavenagh stated that her character is “growing” and “evolving.” Without delving too far into specifics, Kavenagh spoke about the character’s purpose, “… in this season particularly, you find out why and what she has to do, essentially for herself and for the bigger picture.” She continued, broadening the impact to Harfoots as a whole, “I think you’ll see her fulfill that purpose. And I hope you see that happen and how Sauron rising and all of that actually affects her and the Harfoots.”

Season two of The Rings of Power can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video; each episode is released every week on Thursday. There will be eight episodes in total. If you need a refresher on where this season is picking up, the first season of the series is available to stream in full on Prime Video.
