The New 'Spawn' Movie, Starring Jamie Foxx, Attaches New Writers
Jamie Foxx’s highly anticipated reboot Spawn film has new writers. Scott Silver and Malcolm Spellman are now attached to the project. Silver wrote 2019’s blockbuster Joker, and Spellman wrote Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Up-and-coming writer Matt Mixon is also a part of the new writing team. Jamie Foxx is still attached to the project. Spawn’s comic book creator Todd McFarlane was reportedly interested in directing the film; he even went as far as penning his script but is now acknowledging he might not be the best person for the job. However, he is excited to see the project move forward by saying, “If we’ve got an A-list actor, A-list producers, A-list writers, then do you want to shoot for A-list directors, A-list cinematographers? The answer is, ‘Of course.’ Let's keep the momentum going.”
Spellman admits wanting to work on a Spawn film; “Todd McFarlane’s Spawn character was always one of my favorites – a Black superhero that was no bullshit, he was cool and dealt with modern issues.” The new writer team is determined to develop an edgy film that is true to form for the character. All the writers but Mixon come to the table with experience writing superhero features. Silver’s Joker film earned more than $1 billion globally and allowed Joaquin Phoenix to win his best actor Oscar. And Spellman creative Disney+’s hit series The Falcon and the Winter Solider. He is writing the latest installment to the Captain America film franchise: Captain America: New World Order, for Marvel Studios.
Jeremy Renner was previously attached to the film, but it is to be determined; waiting to see the new script from the writing team. McFarlane hopes the Spawn film and the R-rated superhero genre will have a broad audience due to Joker’s success.
