Gears of War has been an extremely successful game franchise with an impressively fervent fan base. With Hollywood making several successful videogame-based movies over the years, it may surprise some that Gears of War hasn’t been picked up yet. It is not for lack of trying on Hollywood’s part when it comes to this popular game. Several entities have begun the process of bringing the game storyline to television and film; unfortunately, it has never made it further than the screenplay stage, new hope however is on the horizon!

Netflix has announced that they intend to release a feature-length live-action film followed by an animated series for adult audiences. The Gears of War official Twitter page retweeted a post by Netflix with the announcement stating, “Happy sweet sixteen Delta! We’re chainsawing our way onto @Netflix.” How cool is it that this announcement comes in conjunction with the 16th anniversary of the game franchise?

Gears of War has sold over 40 million copies and has one of the most substantial storylines with strong character development in the world of gaming. The plot revolves around humanity in an alternate universe of sorts on a planet called Sera. In many ways, it mirrors reality and then takes creative license. Humanity, being too dependent on traditional energy resources which are close to depletion at the start of the first game, discovers a new energy source known as imulsion. Dr. Helen Cooper uses this new agent to create a cleaner and more efficient energy source through the lightmass process. Ultimately, long-term exposure to imulsion causes genetic mutations in humans that lead to the creation of an underground species known as the Locusts and their eventual uprise and attempt to exterminate humanity. The game follows the Delta Squad as they fight against the Locusts to put an end to the war and save what is left of the humans. The game series has been celebrated for its innovation, particularly in strategy, multiplayer, shooting games, and has a loyal fanbase. It will be exciting to see where Netflix takes this intriguing story.
