It wouldn't be the first time that a filing in a trade databank reveals a new product. Impending releases of new Apple devices are often made public by the requirements of local regulations to register such a device in advance. But this time it is no new iPhone or MacBook, but an upcoming video game. More precisely, a new Virtual Reality game. A filing by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) from November 21 reveals that Camouflaj is developing a Batman VR game for Oculus Quest.

Camouflaj was founded in 2011 by Ryan Payton and started with a Kickstarter campaign to fund its first game République, which ended with an impressive amount of $555.000. The first episode of République was released in October 2013, first for iOS and later for Android, PC, Macintosh, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch. Between 2013 and 2016, five episodes of République were released.

In May 2018, Camouflaj released République VR for Oculus and later for HTC Vive and Playstation 4 VR. In September 2017, Camouflaj started the development of Iron Man VR, which was officially announced in March 2019 and released in July 2020 for Playstation VR.

The game received high praise, not only for giving players the chance to put on the famous Iron Man suit and fight a mysterious opponent called Ghost from a first-person POV but also for pushing the boundaries of what was technically possible in the realm of VR games at that time. In November 2022, Iron Man VR was released for Meta Quest. A few months before that Oculus Studios, a division of Meta officially acquired Payton's company.

The timeline on Camouflaj's website says that in July 2020, development for a new, unannounced VR game began, and the FTC filing now strongly implies that this game will be based around Batman.

Only one day after the filing, the FTC asked the Northern District Court of California to remove the filing, as it had been informed by Meta's layers that it contains a reference to a "highly confidential" matter. The new title will not be the first VR game centred around the Dark Knight, as Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Development released Batman: Arkham VR in 2016, first for Playstation 4 and one year later for Windows. As part of the “Batman: Arkham” series, the game received only mixed reviews for being too short and focusing on puzzle solving instead of combat action.

No further information on Camouflaj's upcoming Batman VR game is currently available, but if development did begin more than two years ago, a release sometime next year is possible.
