The Flash is the summer’s most anticipated film to date, and during an interview with Esquire Middle East, Andy Muschietti, director of the upcoming DC Studios film, revealed the shocking cameo fans have wanted for years since the failed Tim Burton film Superman Lives which cast Nicolas Cage as the son of Krypton. “Nic was absolutely wonderful…Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it…He is a massive Superman fan. A comic book fanatic.”

Cage’s passion for Superman is well known throughout pop culture, with the actor going as far as naming his biological son, Kal-El, Superman’s given Kryptonian name. The exact nature of Cage’s role in the film remains to be seen. When the first trailer debuted for the film, fans were ecstatic to see Michael Keaton return as the Caped Crusader who starred in Tim Burton’s 1989 and 1992 films Batman and Batman Returns. Ben Affleck reprises his role as his version of Gotham’s Guardian from the now-maligned Synderverse along with Ezra Miller, who is set to return as Barry Allen, the Flash.

As Tim Burton found success with the Batman franchise, he set his sight on developing a Superman film for Warner Bros, which focused on Superman’s battle with the dubious Doomsday. Nicolas Cage spoke with Variety recently about the now cult-classic-that-never-came-be, saying, “It was more of a 1980s Superman with, like, the samurai black long hair…I thought it was gonna be a really different, sort of emo Superman, but we never got there.” Fans can only hope the cameo can lead to more opportunities to see a Nic Cage version of Superman in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

The Flash debuts worldwide on June 16, 2023.
